To a significant portion of the right, real men have no problem condoning slut-shaming or calling women “dogs.” To this element, any guy who has even an iota of basic decency is a “beta male” at best and a “cuck” at worst.
We got a lovely reminder of this on Friday afternoon. Just 24 hours after Christine Blasey Ford brought much of the nation to tears with her account of how she said Brett Kavanaugh assaulted her 35 years ago, the Senate Judiciary Committee appeared to show how little it thought of her. It voted along party lines, 11-10, to send Kavanaugh’s nomination as a Supreme Court justice to the Senate floor.
But during the final committee debate, one of those 11 ayes, Jeff Flake of Arizona, threw a monkey wrench into the works. He said that he could not vote to confirm Kavanaugh in the full Senate without a FBI investigation into Blasey Ford’s claims. What’s more, he hinted that other Republicans feel the same way.
Within hours of the committee vote, it became clear that at least two of those other Republicans were Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, the only Republicans at this point who are undecided on Kavanaugh. Flake himself supports Kavanaugh, at least for now–though he suggested an FBI investigation could change his mind.
The math was simple. With Flake voting no, Donald Trump would have potentially been in the humiliating position of having to use Mike Pence’s tie-breaking vote to put Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. But if even one more Republican broke ranks and all of the Democrats voted no, Kavanaugh’s nomination would have died. In the worst-case scenario, with Flake, Murkowski, Collins and all of the Democrats voting no, Kavanaugh’s nomination would have gone down in flames, 52-48.
As if he had a choice, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell asked the White House to order a FBI probe into Blasey Ford’s claims. And as if he had a choice, Trump greenlighted the investigation.
Predictably, this turn of events caused a lot of deplorable heads to explode. Take Trump-worshiping black conservative pastor Jesse Lee Peterson, for instance.
So in Peterson’s world, wanting a credible third-party investigation into such serious allegations makes you a “beta male.” And here I thought Flake saw such serious allegations merited a credible, third-party investigation. Oh, that’s right. In deplorable land, a man who shows basic decency is a beta male.
I have to wonder–are McConnell and Trump beta males too? After all, if Peterson had his way, they would have rejected Flake’s request out of hand and simply rammed Kavanaugh through. But cold hard math ruled this out–though Peterson doesn’t want you to know that.
Another prominent black conservative, teen activist and social commentator CJ Pearson, was only slightly more restrained.
Well, that’s interesting. According to a recent poll Marist College conducted for NPR and PBS Newshour, 83 percent of self-identified Republicans support Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Even more shockingly, 54 percent of self-identified Republicans believe Kavanaugh should be confirmed even if it turns out Blasey Ford is telling the truth.
From where I’m sitting, Flake is the one who showed courage. Then again, Pearson and other right-wingers never forgave Flake for not only publicly opposing Roy Moore in the special election for Jeff Sessions’ Senate seat in Alabama, but donating to the campaign of his Democratic foe, now-Senator Doug Jones. Apparently for the deplorables, keeping perverts out of Washington is less important than party.
But such details apparently didn’t matter to counterterrorism adviser and current Fox News contributor Sebastian Gorka.
Jack Posobiec, who parlayed his notoriety as a Pizzagate peddler into a gig with hard-right network One America News, had a ready answer for Gorka’s question.
So wanting a credible investigation into a man up for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land makes you a Democrat? Duly noted.
We already knew a significant element of Trump’s most diehard supporters believe that basic decency is a serious minus, if not disqualifying. This is yet more proof. They are so desperate to lock in a conservative majority on the Supreme Court that they see any attempts to investigate serious allegations against a prospective justice as the actions of a beta male. Let that sink in.
