Let’s not beat around the bush. Russia’s attempt to hack the 2016 election represented nothing less than an attack on the very foundations of our democracy. You would think that there would be bipartisan support for getting to the bottom of this travesty, as well as the threat it represented.
Well, you thought wrong. For most of the last year, special counsel Robert Mueller, who has been leading the effort to get to the bottom of this travesty, has been the target of unhinged attacks from the right. Those attacks may have ramped up to a new, and chilling, level on Thursday night, when one of the right’s loudest talking heads all but called Mueller a clear and present danger to this country.
Mark Levin, the founder of Conservative Review and CRTV, has argued for some time that the Russian hacking probe is a stalking horse for a coup attempt against Trump by holdovers from the Obama administration. For instance, after Mueller impaneled a grand jury, Levin railed that it was nothing more than an attempt to cripple Trump before the midterms. Listen here.
Well, Levin felt the need to googol down on this point on Thursday. And he found a willing listener in one of Trump’s best friends, Sean Hannity. Watch here.
It was obvious where this was going when Hannity argued that under the Constitution, Trump was not obligated to talk to those running “this witch hunt” against him. He asked Levin to “take it from there.” Levin jumped in head first.
First of all, Robert Mueller is a greater threat to this republic and the constitution than anything Vladimir Putin did during the campaign.
How’s that, you ask? Well, Levin slammed Mueller for trying to take down Trump when “the president is not a witness to any crime.” Additionally, Levin argued that Mueller does not have the right to question Trump about the firing of FBI Director James Comey, since under Justice Department rules, “a president cannot be questioned by a subordinate, like Mr. Mueller, about his prerogatives as president.”
Levin claimed there was an effort to “turn this country upside down” and “disenfranchise” Trump’s voters–and it was being orchestrated by a “rogue prosecutor” who was a “plaything” of Obama holdovers. He then repeated the right-wing talking point that there was more evidence of collusion on Hillary Clinton’s part–a point that Hannity ate up, adding that the Steele dossier was a fraud and the investigation sounded like something you’d expect in the Soviet era.
There is so much wrong with this that it’s hard to know where to start. For one thing, even if Trump wasn’t a direct witness to any crime, we know that at the very least, he fostered an environment in which it was remotely acceptable for members of his campaign to meet with agents of a hostile foreign power. Trump admitted as much when he tweeted that the meeting at Trump Tower was intended to get dirt on Hillary Clinton.
We also know that this is the best-case scenario. So riddle me this, Mark–how is Mueller a threat to this country if he wants to get to the bottom of what happened at that meeting?
And by claiming that Mueller had no right to question Trump about the Comey firing, Levin is asking us to ignore the 500-pound gorilla in the room–Trump admitted that he fired Comey to take the heat off the Russia probe. So a prosecutor who wants to investigate potential obstruction of justice is a “rogue prosecutor” who poses a threat to this country?
Levin worked in the Justice Department during the Reagan administration. He should know very well that Mueller would be derelict at best by not pursuing these angles. Then again, Levin worked for Attorney General Ed Meese, so that may explain why his moral compass is warped.
Nevertheless, it cannot be stated enough. A major right-wing commentator believes the man who is trying to get to the bottom of Russia’s attempt to hack the election poses a greater threat to this country than the man who ordered the hacking. Even allowing for it airing on Fox News, it says a lot about the insanity that has overtaken the right of late. And the Trump diehards wonder why we call them deplorable?
