For almost four years, the religious right has insisted that if you oppose Donald Trump, there’s a chance you need deliverance, posthaste. After all, the nation’s so-called moral guardians have told anyone within range of their voices and social media feeds that the devil himself is driving the opposition to Trump.
That’s why it came as something of a surprise when most elements of the religious right remained silent after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the launch of a formal impeachment inquiry last week. But by the end of the week, the Trumpvangelical Army’s noise machine had ramped up full blast.
For instance, rabidly pro-Trump “prophet” Hank Kunneman shared a “word from the Lord” suggesting that the Democrats’ efforts to impeach and remove Trump could boomerang back on them. Kunneman conveniently got this word in May, but didn’t bother to share it until recently–long after it became clear that the only thing that boomeranged was Trump’s notion that he could get away with using the power of his office to bully a political rival.
This would be enough in and of itself to prove that some of the most rabidly pro-Trump elements of the religious right are so determined to keep their followers bowing and praying to the orange god they helped make that they are willing to condone a breach of one of the most sacred trusts in any democracy. But yet more proof came last Friday, when one of the most obnoxious members of the Trumpvangelical Army took aim at one of his dear one’s biggest gadflies in Congress, House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff. If you believe this supposed man of God, Schiff is long overdue for deliverance.
Lance Wallnau is almost in a class by himself among the religious right leaders who have turned Trump into, for lack of a better term, an orange calf. He claims that those who oppose Trump are giving the devil an open route into their homes, and accused Robert Mueller of pumping a demonic cloud over Trump. He also thinks that the media’s efforts to hold Trump to account prove that is a false prophet.
With rhetoric like that, it should come as no surprise that Wallnau joined most of his fellow deplorables in howling with outrage at Schiff’s grilling of acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire. For those who missed it, Schiff opened the hearing by delivering what he believed to be the “essence” of Trump’s now-infamous chat with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. Watch here.
Schiff made clear that he was merely offering a summary of Trump’s remarks, “shorn of its rambling character and in not so many words.” But apparently that was lost on Trump, who loudly accused Schiff of putting words into his mouth. As if on cue, Trump diehards began calling for Schiff’s head.
On Friday afternoon, Wallnau added his voice to this deplorable chorus. He took to Facebook to lay into Schiff just before leaving for a trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Wallnau claimed that Schiff acted in a “most outrageous and dangerous” manner by reading an “incendiary, lying transcript” of the call. Wallnau told his viewers that from what he saw of Schiff during that hearing, “the guy looks like he needs deliverance.”
But Wallnau promptly cut the legs out from under his own argument by playing a clip of that “flippin’ nutjob” Schiff’s opening statement, courtesy of Rush Limbaugh. But apparently Wallnau hit “play” too soon, because we clearly heard Schiff say that he was describing the “essence” of Trump’s remarks.
That didn’t stop Wallnau from screaming “all lies” midway through Schiff’s remarks, then claiming he was “dumbfounded” at Schiff’s remarks. To Wallnau’s mind, it proved just how hard up Schiff was to “overturn the will of 600 million Americans” by impeaching Trump.
In his haste to peddle one of the most shopworn talking points of the Trump camp–that Democrats are attacking those who voted for Trump by going after their dear one–Wallnau may have gotten a little carried away. Trump actually took 63 million votes to Hillary Clinton’s 66 million. So by that logic, Lance, the Democrats shouldn’t have impeached Richard Nixon in the wake of his 1972 landslide. Yep, they should have ignored the fact that he actively participated in covering up numerous illegal activities. After all, they were overturning the will of 47 million people.
But it’s rather telling that this was only the second biggest lie Wallnau told. He suggested that by summarizing Trump’s outrageous behavior, Schiff proved that he’s in dire need of deliverance. Sadly, it looks like Wallnau’s listeners lapped up this blatant alternative facting. Here’s a sample of the comments.
Exposures are coming in from the demonic assault against President Donald Trump that will backfire upon themselves in Jesus name!
Schiff needs to be removed from the House of Representatives! He committed Fraud against Congress! He’s got a demon in residence!
He needs deliverance! You can see it in the eyes!!
so sad to see the Leviathan deceive so many . . .
We pray for a Restraining Order from the Courts of Heaven for this newest lie against President Trump
Very demonic look, he definitely need Deliverance.
THIS REMINDS ME OF THE SHINING!
Schiff looks demonic!! God bless our dear President
Reptilian beings…. As in the day of Noah!
Need to restrain him and do an exorcism on him.
As I write this on Monday night, Trump’s average approval rating at FiveThirtyEight is 42.1 percent. In any other world, with any other politician, we would be calling a code. So how is Trump able to remain standing? Well, now we have our answer. The religious right has somehow convinced us that efforts to summarize his outrageous behavior are a sign that whoever is doing the summarizing is in need of deliverance.
