Of the many outrages that have come from Donald Trump’s administration, one of the biggest is his willingness to get too cozy for comfort with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin. After all, not only do we know that Russia hacked the election–possibly with the collusion of Trump campaign operatives–but Putin runs Russia like a crime boss. But to hear one pro-Trump pastor talk, we’re lying about the real reason for our outrage.
Among the religious right pastors and evangelists who are still bowing down to Trump, Rick Joyner of MorningStar Ministries is almost in a class by himself. Among other things, he claims that the opposition to Trump is being driven by the devil. Joyner believes God has his hand on Trump–and for that reason, anyone who dares oppose him will end up falling on their faces.
Did the spectacle of Trump uncritically accepting Putin’s claim that he didn’t hack the election dissuade Joyner? Or Trump’s blatant lying about his own words at the now-infamous press conference in Helsinki? Nope, not by a longshot. Indeed, on Wednesday, he told his Facebook followers that Trump’s foes are hiding the real reason for their outrage at the growing bromance between Trump and Putin.
While on vacation on the Alabama Gulf Coast, Joyner claimed that liberals aren’t really upset about Russia hacking the election or Putin’s disregard for democracy. As he sees it, we’re really upset because a Putin-Trump alliance potentially represents “one of the most threatening things in the world to the left, to the leftist agenda.”
How’s that, you ask? Well, for one, Joyner thinks we’re more upset about Putin’s uncompromising opposition to LGBT rights.
“Putin is probably the biggest or most powerful world leader who has stood up vehemently, without compromise, to the LGBT agenda and said, ‘You will not bring that in our country. That will not come here, it is not allowed.'”
Joyner then claimed with a straight face that gays aren’t persecuted in Russia. Really, Rick? Then how do you explain an infamous 2013 law that banned the distribution of “gay propaganda” to minors? It is worded so broadly that it has the effect of criminalizing the LGBT rights movement. Moreover, it has directly led to a spike in homophobic violence. It’s added to Russia’s reputation as perhaps the most homophobic country in the developed world.
And if gays aren’t persecuted in Russia, Rick, then how do you explain why a number of LGBT fans told Deutche Welle that they felt pause about coming to the World Cup? Watch here.
Joyner claimed that there’s another reason we’re lying about our outrage at Putin–he’s a staunch opponent of “globalism” who will not allow George Soros to even enter his country.
So let’s get this straight. When we express concern about the near-total lack of an independent press in Russia, we’re lying about it to cover for the radical homosexual agenda. When we express concern about Putin personally ordering his minions to hack into Democratic computers, we’re actually running interference for people who want to destroy marriage. And when we hit the ceiling over Trump uncritically accepting Putin’s claim that he didn’t hack the election, we were really wailing over the defeat of the globalist plot.
If you’re trying to get your head around this, don’t feel bad. This kind of alternative facting is SOP for Trump diehards.
I showed this to Joyner’s daughter, environmental activist Anna Jane Joyner–who, unlike her father, is an open and unashamed Democrat. She called it “disturbing on many levels,” and believes it’s a sign that he’s “brainwashed.” Ironically, Joyner encouraged Anna Jane and her siblings to think for themselves growing up. It doesn’t seem to be a coincidence that they’re all Democrats now.
One would hope that Joyner would take his own advice. If he did, he would see that we aren’t lying about why we’re sounding the alarm about Trump cozying up to a man who runs his country like a crime boss.
