The religious right would like you to believe that it just wants to give Americans with “traditional values” a place at the table. But when they don’t think anyone is paying attention, they reveal their true goal–to turn this country into a Christian version of Iran, Taliban-era Afghanistan, or ISIS. In their eyes, their opponents are agents of the devil himself, and must be dealt with harshly.
Well, in the eyes of one very prominent religious right luminary, the Jewish people are part of the devil’s army. Indeed, he sees it as his Christian duty to call them out for causing all of the country’s ills.
As extreme as the religious right has gotten lately, some of its luminaries have had to work overtime to stand out. Well, it seems that Rick Wiles of TruNews has been struggling to find his niche. It’s not enough to pillory Tom Brady for supposedly bedding a witch or dancing a jig at the prospect of sin being literally frozen out. Nope, Wiles seems to be making a name for himself by veering into out-and-out anti-Semitism.
For some time, Wiles has wrung his hands at how much Donald Trump is supposedly being influenced by his daughter, Ivanka, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner. But lately, the tenor of his attacks has taken a particularly sinister tone. He has claimed that Ivanka and Jared, as Modern Orthodox Jews, have worked to surround Trump with Jewish mystics. He claims that amounts to Trump literally getting advice from agents of the devil.
That was a dog whistle. But more recently, Wiles has taken to blowing anti-Semitic train whistles. Last month, for instance, he claimed that the White House push to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide was hard evidence that Trump was “owned by the Jews.”
On Friday’s edition of TruNews TV, he blew another one–claiming Jews were responsible for all of the evil in the world. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
A little over an hour into the show, Wiles claimed that “the synagogue of Satan” was responsible for all manner of evil in our culture–abortion, porn, “filthy, raunchy movies (and) television shows,” gangsta rap, the lot.
Wiles pastors Flowing Streams Church in Vero Beach, Florida; indeed, he bills TruNews as an “outreach” of this nondenominational charismatic church. As he sees it, it’s particularly incumbent upon him as a minister to call out this supposed “synagogue of Satan”–and is willing to do so “even if it costs me my life.” As he saw it, it is not possible to “stand for Jesus Christ and righteousness in this world” without doing so.
According to Jews for Judaism, a group that works to counter efforts to convert Jews, this is a twist on a very common anti-Semitic trope. It’s taken from two passages in Revelation that imply that Jews who did not accept Jesus worship the devil.
So in other words, Wiles claimed that it is incumbent upon every true Christian to claim Jews are agents of Satan. It is literally impossible to get more blatant than that.
But just in case there was any doubt where Wiles was going, he erased it by likening this country to a living room “piling up with elephant dung” like abortion, gun control, attacks on parental rights, property rights, etc. He claimed that while “conservative Christian patriots” were “griping about the elephant crap,” they weren’t willing to even discuss doing something about the elephant. Indeed, he claimed, you aren’t allowed to even talk about the elephant.
As far as Wiles was concerned, that elephant is the “synagogue of Satan”–i. e., the Jews.
Well, who’s crapping on the country? Who’s crapping in this country? Who has brought the abortion, the homosexuality, the sexual liberation movement, the vile movies? Who has attacked our Christian culture? Who has filed lawsuits to remove crosses and Bibles? Who has done it? The synagogue of Satan.
Wiles warned his fellow pastors that it’s not possible to “preach the Gospel” and not be willing to call out the “synagogue of Satan.” Translation: in Wiles’ eyes, you can’t be a true minister without calling Jews agents of Satan.
Co-host Matt Skow suggested that Wiles was opening himself up to charges of anti-Semitism. Wiles claimed that he wasn’t anti-Semitic, but “anti-Satan.”
No, Rick. Let’s call a spade a spade. You’re a stone-cold anti-Semite. And you’re a so-called pastor who is using the Bible to justify hate, which makes it even more outrageous. In reality, you’re no different from the likes of Richard Spencer and Andrew Anglin. By using your authority as a pastor to attack Jews as agents of the devil, you’re trying to wrap anti-Semitism in the cross.
Per his usual practice, Wiles posted the full show on Facebook as well as on YouTube and on Twitter. Report them all as hate speech. It’s time to put this anti-Semite masquerading as a pastor on notice–this pigweed will not be allowed to stand.
