As we now know, the Democrats retook the House on the strength of flipping 41 seats–the Democrats’ best showing since flipping 49 seats in the aftermath of Watergate. By any standard, this was a blue tsunami.
But for some time, some of the most diehard of the Republican diehards have been telling everyone who would listen that the tsunami was actually red. As early as the day after the election, several religious right “prophets” insisted that their prophecies had indeed come true–the Republicans had actually won the midterms going away.
Apparently they didn’t want to believe that the American people had risen up to take back their country after being swindled by Donald Trump two years prior. But apparently the delusion runs far deeper than we thought. It seems that some of the most deplorable of the deplorables believe that a redo of the last undecided House race, in North Carolina’s 9th District, will be hard proof that there was a red tsunami. Never mind that redo will come because of massive election fraud–on the part of the Republican’s campaign team.
In case you missed it, Republican Mark Harris appeared to have just barely nosed out Democrat Dan McCready by 905 votes in the 9th District, which stretches from south Charlotte to the Sandhills. But the state elections board refused to certify Harris’ apparent victory due to evidence of massive absentee ballot fraud in the two easternmost counties of the district, Bladen and Robeson counties
It subsequently emerged that McCrae Dowless, an independent contractor for Harris’ main campaign consultant, oversaw an operation in which absentee ballots were collected before they were signed, incomplete ballots were filled in, and numerous ballots were discarded rather than sent to Raleigh.
We also learned that Harris had hired Dowless despite being told in no uncertain terms by his own son–a federal prosecutor–that Dowless’ tactics were potentially illegal. When Harris was caught lying about whether his email exchanges with his son would be in evidence, he abruptly called for a new election.
It turns out that even without that reversal, the state board would have had ample reason on its own to call for a new election. An analysis by a statistics professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that some 1,500 absentee ballots in Bladen and Robeson counties never made it to Raleigh–far exceeding Harris’ “lead.”
And yet, “@StormIsUponUs,” one of the more notorious promoters of the Pizzagate/QAnon conspiracy theory, was somehow able to conclude that this was hard proof that there was really a red tsunami.
It’s rather interesting that @StormIsUponUs insists that this upcoming redo will prove the House was “fraudulently hijacked” by the Democrats. After all, we have solid proof that the race in the 9th was almost hijacked–for the Republicans. We have multiple affidavits regarding Dowless’ dirty tricks, as well as two people admitting on camera that they were paid to collect ballots. Moreover, we can prove mathematically that 1,500 people were effectively prevented from voting–enough to affect the outcome of the election.
So all things considered–how in the world can anyone believe that this proves there really was a red tsunami? Well, Mark Taylor, one of the “prophets” who breathlessly insisted there was a red tsunami, seems to be of that mind.
Apparently Taylor didn’t know that McCready came within a whisker of flipping a seat that has been in Republican hands without interruption since 1953, and was drawn to elect a Republican. Trump won this district 54-43, roughly in line with past performance by a Republican presidential candidate. Seems that the truth already came out–the people of this district, like the nation at large, wanted to send a message to Trump.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is an example of the contorted and distorted thinking that is prevalent among the more diehard Trump supporters. They’d like you to believe that a House race that has to be redone because Republican thugs were caught red-handed preventing people from voting could actually prove there was a red tsunami. These aren’t just alternative facts. This is an alternative universe.
