For the better part of the weeks since Election Day, Donald Trump and his most diehard supporters have peddled the meme that Joe Biden only defeated Trump because of massive fraud. We’ve been treated to story after story about Democrats hiding absentee ballots, only to bring them out when it looked like Trump had run up a big lead on Election Day.
However, according to CNN, Trump has known for some time that he lost. However, he launched what can only be described as a coup attempt in order to get back at Democrats for contending that Russian interference helped him win. If this is accurate, it makes his behavior in the 20 days after Election Day even more outrageous. Trump not only spewed bizarre and unfounded conspiracy theories, but went into hiding in the midst of a renewed coronavirus scourge.
This coup attempt only ended on Monday, when General Services Administration finally acknowledged what the world already knew–that Biden is president-elect. But since then, we’ve gotten a number of indications that suggest Trump and his diehards are going to continue their outrageous and borderline un-American attack on the integrity of the election.
We got a preview of one potential Trumpkin tactic from one of the more notorious denizens of the far-right fever swamp, the Media Research Center. Mere hours after the GSA formally acknowledged Biden’s win, the MRC saw fit to roll out a new twist on an old right-wing shibboleth–the media is out to get conservatives. It rolled out a so-called poll that claimed voters in battleground states would have stampeded to Trump in large numbers if the media had reported on smears against Biden.
As I write this on Sunday night, Biden has garnered over 80.1 million votes. But according to the MRC and its longtime impresario, L. Brent Bozell, a good chunk of those 80.1 million people would have either voted for Trump, a third-party candidate, or stayed home if not for the media “hiding Biden’s bad news.” At least, that’s what The Polling Company–the firm once run by former Trump information minister Kellyanne Conway–would have you believe.
In an online survey of 1,750 Biden voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, The Polling Company found that a whopping 17 percent of Biden voters would have voted for Trump had they known about one or more of eight news stories that the MRC claimed had been underreported by the mainstream media. By The Polling Company and the MRC’s accounting, this would have been enough for Trump to flip Nevada and retain Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (North Carolina remained red, but barely)–on paper, enough to give Trump a 311-227 Electoral College victory.
It should surprise no one that the MRC wasted little time using this poll to bludgeon the mainstream media. Watch the MRC’s announcement of this so-called poll here.
If this is so devastating, why call this a “so-called poll,” you ask. Well, two of the stories that the MRC and The Polling Company accuse the media of hiding are actually thoroughly debunked conspiracy theories.
One of these was Tara Reade’s claim that then-Senator Biden sexually assaulted her while she was working as a staffer in his office in 1993. The Polling Company found that a staggering 35.4 percent of respondents didn’t know about these claims. Out of that total, 8.9 percent said they would have changed their vote had they known about them–enough on paper to give Trump another term.
Considering how much coverage Reade got last spring and summer, Bozell and friends must have a funny definition of “hiding.” On the contrary, the media thoroughly vetted Reade’s claims and found them to be non-credible.
For instance, Reade claims the assault happened in a “semi-private area” near Biden’s office in the Russell Senate Office Building. But PBS Newshour reported in May that such an area literally does not exist. On the contrary, the area Reade described corresponds to a high-traffic area between the Russell Building and the Capitol. So Reade was asking us to believe that a United States Senator would commit a brazen sexual assault in a high-traffic area just three years after the Anita Hill scandal.
Moreover, numerous media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, also reported on Reade being exposed for misrepresenting her academic credentials under oath in domestic violence cases. Again, how is this “hiding,” Brent?
The MRC also savaged the media for supposedly hiding reports about the supposed financial scandal surrounding Biden and his son, Hunter. Supposedly, 45.1 percent of respondents didn’t know about reports that then-Vice President Biden used the power of his office to benefit Hunter in his dealings with Ukraine. Out of that total, 9.4 percent of respondents would have abandoned Biden, enough to give Trump the victory.
What the MRC doesn’t tell you is that several other media outlets tried to verify the now-infamous story in the New York Post about Hunter’s supposed dealings–and were unable to do so. Indeed, according to The Times, a number of Post reporters didn’t want their bylines on the story due to concerns about its credibility. The MRC also didn’t tell you that the Trump campaign initially pitched the Hunter story to the Post’s stablemate, The Wall Street Journal–whose editors bristled at the perception that they were doing a hatchet job for Trump.
As it turned out, while The Journal was doing actual journalism, Rudy Giuliani peddled a more sensationalized version of the Hunter story to the Post, which gleefully ran it. As we now know, The Journal reported that based on its review of corporate records, the former vice president was not involved.
And yet, in the face of all of this, the MRC claims the media was hiding this story? There aren’t too many places near MRC headquarters in Northern Virginia where you can buy cojones that big.
For much of the summer of 2020, the MRC ran virtual billboards saying “Believe in America, not the media.” Well, apparently the MRC believes in an America where it is acceptable to use thoroughly debunked conspiracy theories to blow up presidential campaigns. That’s exactly what the MRC is doing by accusing the media of “hiding” these stories in order to help Biden.
And in so doing, the MRC is saying that it wants the toxic political culture of recent years to become normal. Well, Brent, if that’s your view, then it’s clear that you are as much a part of the problem as Trump.
