One of the more nauseating anecdotes of the Donald Trump era is seeing people actually thanking Russia for hacking the election. As far as they’re concerned, Vladimir Putin is a hero for unleashing a cabal of hackers to burrow into Democratic computers. He also orchestrated the push of a torrent of fake news and agitprop to hobble Hillary Clinton.
We’ve seen InfoWars actually thank Russia for pulling this stunt. And we’ve seen Lance Wallnau actually claim that Putin had every right to hack our election. Never mind that as a result, millions of innocent people were exposed to identity theft, and social media nearly drowned in the Russian-flavored lies.
But to a significant element of Trump’s diehards, that doesn’t matter. All that mattered is that Russia helped aid Trump’s push to the White House–and therefore, Putin deserves stormy applause. And in the eyes of one particularly rabid Trumpkin, one of the American accomplices in this shameful episode deserves to be hailed as a hero as well.
If you spend any time on Trump’s Twitter feed, you’ll notice that one of the few people to rise up in support of Trump is right-wing provocateur Jacob Wohl. Without fail, no matter how unhinged Trump may sound, Wohl is there to chime in with what amounts to a 280-character ovation.
Saturday night was no exception. In one of his typical weekend torrents of rage tweets, Trump railed about the indictment of longtime confidant Roger Stone, on charges that he lied to Congress about his role in coordinating with Trump campaign officials in efforts to get stolen emails from WikiLeaks.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is classic Trump deflection. Apparently he doesn’t want us to know that Stone was part and parcel of an effort to publicize emails stolen by the Russian hacker army. Remember, WikiLeaks has been proven to be a Russian intelligence front.
But according to Wohl, that’s just peachy.
Well, that’s interesting. Among the things that Wohl’s “American hero” did, per emails cited in the indictment, was to circulate the smear that Hillary Clinton’s health was shaky. Remember how Sean Hannity and other conservative muckety-mucks helped push the smear that Hillary had an on-air seizure? It turned out this information was planted by WikiLeaks–which makes Hannity and those who pushed it useful idiots at best and accessories at worst.
It cannot be stated enough–this indictment spells out Stone’s role in an effort to push a direct attack on our democracy. By any reasonable standard, Stone is not, repeat NOT, a hero. He’s a dirty, rotten traitor who belongs in prison.
But then again, Wohl’s own moral compass is as warped as that of Stone. He was banned from futures trading for life in 2017 after falsely representing himself as a hedge fund manager and real estate investor. Among other things, he claimed to have ten years’ experience as a hedge fund manager; he is only 20 years old.
But Wohl is best known for his role in a comical attempt to frame Robert Mueller for sexual misconduct. He appeared to set up a bogus private intelligence firm that was supposedly “investigating” claims by several women who made accusations against Mueller.
However, when Wohl and cohort Jack Burkman convened a press conference at which one of the accusers was due to take questions, the “accuser” never showed up. Watch this opera buffa here.
By then, Wohl’s intelligence company had been exposed as a complete hoax, and Wohl himself became the target of a FBI investigation.
A guy with Wohl’s history is exactly the kind of guy who would rally to a soulless golem like Trump. And a guy with Wohl’s history is exactly the kind of guy who would consider a treasonous thug like Stone to be a hero. Yep, he definitely belongs in the basket of deplorables.
