For most of his presidency, Donald Trump has struggled to get his approval ratings out of the low 40s. But the only reason they’re even that high is that the religious right is willing to give Trump a pass for his almost daily outrages as long as he gives them what they want on policy. The nation’s so-called moral guardians openly admitted it; when the Stormy Daniels saga first boiled over, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council said that he and his fellow fundies were giving Trump “a mulligan” as long as he delivered for them.
Well, it seems that at least one prominent fundie is willing to give a pass to one of the few world leaders who is more thuggish than Trump–namely, Trump’s BFF, Russian strongman Vladimir Putin. By this so-called man of God’s logic, Putin was perfectly justified in hacking the 2016 presidential election.
Even by the standards of the many religious right preachers who are still bowing down to Trump, Lance Wallnau is in a class by himself. He believes that you risk letting the devil into your house if you oppose Trump, and that God’s reputation could take a hit if Trump is brought down. That view didn’t change even after Trump’s appalling performance when he met Putin in Helsinki. Indeed, Wallnau suggested those attacking Trump for throwing his own Intelligence Community under the bus were doing Putin’s work for him.
But if that wasn’t enough to prove that this so-called man of God is morally bankrupt, Wallnau put it beyond all doubt in a message to his Periscope fans on Friday. Watch here.
Wallnau expanded on a message he delivered on Facebook earlier on Friday, in which he claimed Trump’s critics were doing the work of the KGB. He spewed what has become a common Trumpkin shibboleth–Robert Mueller’s investigation is tainted because he was pwned by “deep-state intelligence people from the Obama era” who were out to bring Trump down at any cost.
But then Wallnau went off the deep end. He actually claimed that Putin had every right to hack the election.
“By the way, Russia had every right to do what they do because we forget this. Hillary Clinton’s State Department was actually destabilizing Russia by their supposedly pro-democracy 527s and Soros-funded activity in Europe that was out to destabilize Russia and make Putin look bad.”
Wallnau went on to say that Putin was merely doing “what journalism is supposed to do”–uncover the funny business that took place in the Democratic primary. As he saw it, Hillary and the Democrats had it coming for trying to undercut Putin, because “you don’t do that with a former KGB guy and have him come back and poke you in the eye.”
I had to listen to this twice in order to believe it. Watch it for yourself here–Wallnau officially gives Putin a pass at around the 4:55 mark. Apparently in Wallnau’s world, journalists are supposed to steal several gigabytes of personal information–including Social Security numbers and credit card information–and plaster it all over the Internet if they’re supposedly doing so to expose wrongdoing.
That’s what Kremlin-aligned hackers, including a number of Russian military intelligence agents, did when they broke into Democratic computers and used outlets like Guccifer 2.0, WikiLeaks, and DCLeaks to put that information on the tubes. That’s not journalism, Lance. That’s identity theft. And last time I checked, it’s despicable and criminal.
Wallnau makes no secret that he is willing to condone Putin’s tactics, even while admitting that he runs Russia like a crime boss. But if he is willing to join InfoWars in giving Putin a pass for this outrageous and criminal stunt, then he has shown that he is as much of a fraud as Trump.
So is Wallnau willing to tell the thousands of people who had their identities stolen that Putin was in the right because he was doing so to stop Hillary? People like Roy Cockrum and Eric Schoenberg, who are suing the Trump campaign for allegedly being complicit in this criminal stunt? And is he willing to do so to their faces, rather than from the comfort of his home in Dallas?
Maybe we should ask Wallnau–politely of course–if he is willing to grow a set and say this to the victims. Let him know what you think of his willingness to condone identity theft on Facebook and on Twitter.
