For the better part of the last three-plus years, Donald Trump’s most diehard supporters have insisted that any attack on Trump is a sign that we hate those who voted for him. For instance, during the debate on Trump’s impeachment, Republican after Republican railed that the whole process was an attack on the 61 million people who voted for Trump.
For instance, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed that Democrats wanted to impeach Trump because they just couldn’t accept that Trump was president. Watch here.
Earlier, Clay Higgins of Louisiana was even more blunt. The Congressman from Acadiana claimed Democrats were motivated by hate and fear of Trump supporters. No, this isn’t snark. Watch here.
McCarthy, Higgins and others have really short memories. For years, a significant element of the Republican Party and the conservative movement has insisted that no Democratic president is legitimate–whether he or she is white, black, or polka-dotted. This is what drove the relentless hate and bigotry Bill Clinton and Barack Obama faced.
Well, one of Trump’s youngest and most loyal supporters took this line to a new and despicable level. He strongly hinted that those who support Biden hate their own country.
Charlie Kirk is the founder and president of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, and is also chairman of the largest pro-Trump youth organization, Students for Trump. However, he is forging a brand of his own with a podcast, “The Charlie Kirk Show.” At around the 19:40 mark of Friday’s edition, Kirk was discussing a recent spate of rotten polling numbers for Trump. One poll shows Trump trailing Biden by 14 points.
But Kirk mused that what we were seeing wasn’t really hate for Trump, but “a temporary temperature check” on the country’s mood. He didn’t think that any president would be leading in the polls in the wake of a pandemic, protests, attacks from the media, and a recent impeachment. He believed that things would change once “those of us who love our country” ramped up the negative ads.
Kirk’s suggestion that Biden’s standing would weaken in the face of attacks from “those of us who love our country” may have sounded innocuous enough at first. But it was cast in a less-than-savory light when Kirk unloaded on former Hewlett-Packard CEO and 2016 presidential hopeful Carly Fiorina. Less than 24 hours earlier, Fiorina had announced she would vote for Biden, saying that she had made it clear for some time that she could not vote for Trump.
To Kirk, this was rank heresy. He recalled spending a good deal of time with Fiorina in 2015, 2016, and 2017, and noted she spoke at a number of Turning Point events. At these events, Kirk said, Fiorina described herself as a pro-life conservative who loves her country and will do her part to keep this country the greatest in the world. He added that despite her distaste for Trump, she committed to support whoever won the nomination in 2016.
As far as Kirk was concerned, Fiorina’s support for Biden means that at best, she’s a “liar,” and at worst, “she’s changed her entire perspective, and now she hates America.” He strongly hinted it was the latter when he concluded that Fiorina either “now hates her country” or she has always hated America from the beginning.
Wait a minute. Weren’t Kirk and a number of other Republicans skipping and dancing in 2016 when Democrats broke ranks to support Trump? Since when are Democrats allowed to defect, while Republicans are expected to sit down, shut up, and vote for their nominee? Even more insidious is Kirk’s suggestion that Fiorina may be a closet America-hater. Was Kirk saying that only those who hate America would vote for Biden? It sure sounds like it.
This can’t be dismissed as just another right-winger blowing smoke. This is coming from one of the leaders of the official Trump student organization, and the leader of a major conservative campus organization. Imagine if a liberal teenager claimed that only those who hate America would vote for Trump. Kirk would be screaming bloody murder. Well, Charlie, you can’t have it both ways.
