On November 20, Georgia governor Brian Kemp confirmed what the nation already knew–Joe Biden had become the first Democrat to win the Peach State since 1992, and only the second non-Georgian Democrat to do so in 60 years. Biden did so on the strength of massive turnout in the Atlanta area. The fact that this came a mere two years after Kemp almost certainly won the governorship due to massive voter suppression makes the irony even more pronounced.
A look at Georgia’s county map shows the Atlanta area almost coated blue. Cobb and Gwinnett counties, long considered stereotypical Southern Republican suburban counties, broke for Biden by double digits just two years after Hillary Clinton became the first non-Georgia Democrat to win them since John F. Kennedy in 1960. This was part of a larger trend of highly educated suburban counties turning their backs on Trump.
As we now know, Trump spent much of November orchestrating one of the closest things this country has ever seen to a coup attempt. Even though he knows that he lost, he churned out a slew of bizarre and outright baseless arguments suggesting that Biden had only won because of fraud.
One of the loudest and most obnoxious promoters of this hokum is Atlanta attorney Lin Wood. You may know Wood as the attorney for Richard Jewell, the man falsely accused of setting a bomb in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park. He helped Jewell win a number of settlements with media outlets over their initial coverage of the bombing, and also helped win a settlement with the college where Jewell formerly worked over statements college officials made about Jewell’s past.
But that legacy has been shredded in recent months with his ridiculous legal maneuvering in Trump’s name. In November, Wood went to court in hopes of stopping Kemp and Georgia secretary of State Brad Raffensperger from certifying Biden’s win, claiming that absentee ballot rules were changed in a way that made the election illegal.
While that suit was pending, Wood told Mark Levin that Trump won the election in a national landslide, with over 70 percent of the vote. No, this isn’t snark. Listen here, courtesy Gateway Pundit.
Just before Kemp and Raffensperger certified the results, federal judge Steven Grimberg–a Trump appointee–threw out Wood’s suit. In a scathing opinion, Grimberg told Wood that even if he had standing to sue or filed his suit in a timely manner, his suit had “no basis in fact or law.”
But that hasn’t stopped Wood from attacking Kemp and Raffensperger for showing insufficient loyalty to their lord and master, Trump. Despite prodding from Trump himself, Kemp refused to overrule Raffensperger’s decision to uphold Biden’s win after a statewide recount.
In response, Wood and several other rabid Trump supporters have threatened to sit out the two runoff elections for Georgia’s two U. S. Senate seats–a regular election in which David Perdue is seeking a second term, and a special election in which Kelly Loeffler is seeking to finish Johnny Isakson’s third term. Wood himself is seeking an injunction to stop the two runoffs, currently scheduled for January 5. But if the runoffs are held, he won’t vote in either one.
On Tuesday, Wood went further. He claimed that Kemp, Raffensperger, and Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan are agents of Satan.
So actually respecting the will of the people makes you a “devil”? Oh, the horror!
Oh, that’s right–in the minds of Wood and other hard-core Republicans, Democratic victories are never legitimate. And that applies whether the Democratic winner is white, black or polka-dotted.
So let’s see if we’ve got this right. In order to stick it to “devils” like Kemp who refuse to do their duty and help “keep America great,” Wood is actually willing to risk letting that radical socialist mob have all the levers of power in Washington. Then again, hard-core Trumpers never could be accused of thinking logically.
