For the better part of the last four-plus years, we have been treated to a steady drumbeat of “words from the Lord” foretelling another term for Donald Trump. Well, from the moment the networks declared Joe Biden president-elect on November 7, these men and women of God all had a lot of egg on their faces. And with the Electoral College cementing Biden’s victory earlier this week, it is now official–they are false prophets.
That includes people like Kat Kerr, who breathlessly declared in January that “God would be in the White House” for 24 years–eight for Trump, eight for Mike Pence, and eight for Pence’s vice president. Sorry, Kat–you just came up 16 years short.
That includes people like Hank and Brenda Kunneman, who once likened Trump to Moses. The Kunnemans noted that God chose Moses to lead the Israelites despite their complaints, and he’s doing the same with Trump. Well, if that’s true, Hank and Brenda, how did Biden beat Trump by over seven million votes?
Micael Grenholm, a progressive Pentecostal pastor from Sweden, compiled a mashup of other men and women of the cloth who claimed God told them Trump would win reelection. Watch it here.
While it’s to be expected that these false prophets are facing hackles from the left, they’re facing hackles from one of their own as well. Namely, pastor, author, and activist Michael L. Brown.
Brown was one of the original leaders of the Brownsville Revival in Pensacola, Florida. He struck out on his own in 2001, and now helms a ministry in my hometown of Charlotte that combines Brownsville’s original spirit with line-drawing social conservatism.
The latter led him to hold his nose and vote for Trump in 2016. He argued that for all of Trump’s flaws, “stopping a pro-abortion radical and an extreme supporter of the LGBT agenda” was more important. It led him to do so again in 2020; this past summer, he argued that for all of Trump’s flaws, the alternative was full-blown socialism.
But unlike a number of his religious right compatriots, Brown hasn’t rushed pell-mell into the “Stop the Steal” camp. He made that clear in his latest column for The Stream, the Christian conservative blog that he helms alongside fellow religious right luminary James Robison.
Brown warns his compatriots that there was “no middle ground” and “no third option” for those who claimed God told them Trump would win. What of those who claim that Trump really won, or that God will consider Trump the rightful president in his sight. Hogwash, Brown says. Such suggestions “mock the integrity of prophecy.”
This was probably aimed at people like Hank Kunneman. During a recent service at his church in Omaha, Kunneman openly bristled at those who point at him and others who predicted a Trump win and say, “You’re false prophets!”
Kunneman told his audience that it was not possible for “God’s leading prophets” to be wrong while the media is right. Um, Hank? Your compatriot Brown would disagree with you. He believes that you and others need to sit down and ask some very hard questions about your incessant predictions of a Trump win.
When all is said and done, Brown believes that there needs to be “serious accountability, reflection, and even repentance” for missing the mark on the election. One has to wonder where this was in 2012, when “firefighter prophet” Mark Taylor boldly predicted that Trump would make Barack Obama a one-term president. As most religious-right watchers now know, Taylor rose to fame by simply retconning his prophecy to predict Trump would win in 2016. That’s not how this works, Mark.
Brown believes that there are only two possible outcomes for all of these prophecies about a Trump win in 2020.
(T)he fact is that either these prophets heard accurately from God, as some of them did more than four years ago when they said Trump would be our next president, seemingly against all odds, or they did not hear accurately from God. Period.
In the latter case, by definition, that makes those who foretold a Trump victory false prophets.
