For the last three-plus years, the religious right has warned Americans, especially evangelicals, against opposing Donald Trump. Their explanation? God himself chose Trump to be president, so opposing him amounts to opposing God. Therefore, as the story goes, if you dare to stand against Trump, you will be accountable to the Almighty.
Just in case we didn’t get the hint, two rabid Trumpvangelicals used the death of Congressman Elijah Cummings to remind us that there are serious consequences for opposing Trump. As chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Cummings was one of the key players in the House impeachment inquiry. But if you believe Christianist conspiracy merchant Chris McDonald, when Cummings died early Thursday morning, it was because God was making him pay the ultimate price for his insolence. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
McDonald told guest Stacey Shiflett that God “had had enough” of Cummings’ incessant attacks on Trump, and “moved” by striking Cummings dead.
Not to be outdone, black conservative pastor Jesse Lee Peterson claimed that Cummings had learned the hard way what happens when you stand against a man whom Peterson calls “The Great White Hope.” Watch here.
Peterson claimed that Cummings was but the latest to be held accountable for daring to oppose Trump. He recalled that a number of people have turned up dead after they “talked about” and “went against” Trump. To his mind, it was “amazin’.”
These anecdotes alone would prove beyond any doubt that the nation’s so-called moral guardians are out to bully and bludgeon the nation into bowing and praying to the orange god they helped make. But even more proof came on Friday from Trump’s principal spiritual adviser, Paula White. She crassly declared that if you don’t vote for Trump in 2020, you’ll have to answer for it in heaven.
White sat down with Jim Bakker to promote her new book, “Something Greater.” The discussion soon turned to how Trump has changed the federal judiciary. Remember, folks, the main reason that the religious right made what can only be described as a Faustian deal with Trump is because Trump promised to appoint conservative judges who would be inclined to roll back abortion and marriage equality. White made clear that this should be foremost in voters’ minds in 2020. Right Wing Watch got a clip.
White noted that Trump had already been able to make two Supreme Court justices, and it was a near certainty he’d be able to pick a third, with the potential for “a fourth or even a fifth.” She claimed that this was a big reason why people should ignore any reservations about Trump’s personality and sure their views on policy squared with the Bible.
You’re going to have a make a decision that won’t be just held accountable here for how things turn out for you, your children, your grandchildren. But you’re going to have to stand accountable before God one day.
In case she hadn’t made herself clear, White suggested that “all hell was trembling” at the prospect of a long-lasting conservative majority on the Supreme Court. The message was obvious–no matter what you may think about Trump’s behavior, the courts are so important that you must suck it up and vote for Trump next year.
This episode aired just 24 hours after we learned that Trump had decided to hold next year’s G-7 Summit at his golf resort near Miami–a blatant act of self-dealing. It also came 24 hours after acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney admitted that Trump made military aid to Ukraine conditional on Kiev getting dirt on Joe Biden–a tacit admission that Trump was using the power of his office to bully a political rival.
And yet, if you decide that you can’t vote for a president who engages in such behavior, you could be held accountable by God for doing so? In light of this development, Bakker’s decision to let this episode air is curious at best.
Earlier this month, White claimed that her work for Trump was an “assignment” from God. Apparently she’s so devoted to this “assignment” that she is willing to tell people that God will hold them accountable if they ignore Trump’s depravities. Let there no longer be any doubt–Paula White is a creature of the Trump swamp. And along with every other man and woman of the cloth who has tried to bully us into supporting Trump, she must be drained.
