To hear the religious right talk, Donald Trump got an assignment from God himself–don’t just make America great again, but make America Christian again. If you believe the nation’s so-called moral guardians, God considered this task so important that he, not Russia, hacked the election for Trump. At bottom, that explains why Trump maintains otherworldly support among the most fundified elements of the country–even though evidence mounts that he had few qualms about using the power of his office to bully a political rival.
But even before then, it was clear beyond any doubt that Trump was manifestly unfit for office. And yet, the religious right is not only all-in for him, but has continued its campaign to bully people of faith into supporting him. Simply put, that makes the religious right complicit in the massive swindle Trump has perpetrated on the country.
However, some religious right leaders are more complicit than others. Among those in that category is televangelist Paula White, who not only serves as Trump’s principal spiritual adviser, but has the additional assignment of chairing Trump’s evangelical advisory board.
White is of a piece with Trump in more ways than one. She is one of many prosperity preachers who rallied to Trump’s standard early on. When you preach a gospel that revels in excess, you’re a natural fit for a man who is the very definition of the entitled one-percenter. Although White hasn’t been quite as ham-handed about it as the likes of Jesse Lee Peterson, Lance Wallnau, and Jim Bakker, she has few qualms about peddling a false narrative about Trump.
To hear her talk, Trump has been a “beacon of hope” for people of faith after the supposed darkness that was Barack Obama’s tenure. At a White House dinner for prominent Trumpvangelicals, White gave Trump a Bible with an inscription touting the “greatness” he has brought to this country. She would also have you believe that Trump is a Christian who holds his faith “close to his heart“–even as he has proven time and again that he has few qualms about degrading women and reveling in it.
Those anecdotes alone would be reason to wonder if White’s priorities are warped. But she gave us even more reason to do so on Monday, when she took to Facebook for a live signing of her new book, “Something Greater: Finding Triumph Over Trials.” White revealed that her book will delve a lot into her work with Trump. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
White said that her book will not only reveal how the Trump evangelical advisory board was formed, but how she ended up with as Trump’s spiritual adviser. She claimed that she once said she would never get involved in politics. However, she doesn’t see it as a matter of politics, but a matter of fulfilling an “assignment” she received from the Almighty–an assignment that she felt she couldn’t turn down.
To say no to President Trump would be saying no to God, and I won’t do that.
Okay, Paula. I’ll play. Like you, I’m a charismatic/Pentecostal Christian. So you’ll have to pardon me if I rolled my eyes while watching this. After all, if you’re this open about saying you were effectively ordered to take on this assignment, I can only assume that you believe this order still stands.
So are you saying you still feel obligated to go all in for a man who has openly called for foreign countries to get dirt on a political rival? Are you saying that you still feel obligated to serve a man whose party considers such behavior to be merely a joke? Are you saying that you still feel obligated to serve a man who doesn’t bat an eyelash at calling a Latina, two blacks, an Arab and two Jews “savages“? And on, and on, and on.
At best, Paula, whatever advice you’re giving Trump isn’t sticking. Matthew 7:20 says, “You will know them by their fruits”–and it should be obvious that Trump’s fruit is rancid. And have you considered the possibility that maybe, just maybe, God is telling you that your assignment has run out? If not, then you’re putting God in a box.
Whatever the case, Paula, you’re helping Trump overflow the swamp. If you’re not careful, you run the risk of being drained along with the rest of the Trumpvangelicals. After all, there’s a day of reckoning coming very soon–and the men and women of the cloth who helped Trump swindle the country will have a lot for which to answer.
