Donald Trump is perhaps the most morally bankrupt man ever to occupy the White House. That has been proven time and again over the years–most infamously when he blamed both sides for the horror in Charlottesville in 2017, forgetting that one of those sides was made up of Nazis and white supremacists. Well, he proved it once again this week. He has harsher words for a Minnesota city council that voted to end the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance before its meetings than he does for Labor Secretary Alex Acosta’s shameful and illegal plea deal with Jeffrey Epstein.
Back in June, the city council of St. Louis Park, just west of Minneapolis, unanimously voted to no longer recite the Pledge before council meetings. They billed it as an effort to appear more inclusive to new residents and non-citizens. However, after a slew of public comments, the city council decided to revisit the matter at a July 8 study session.
That session drew plenty of protesters, as WCCO-TV in Minneapolis reported. Watch here.
Ultimately, mayor Jake Spano and several other council members made a motion to reinstate the Pledge. However, after others called for another meeting to discuss the matter further, the council voted to hold a public input session, with details to be hashed out at another study session on July 22.
That didn’t stop Trump from seeing another chance to throw some red meat to his followers. He decided to weigh in after following events on “Fox & Friends.”
He weighed in again early Thursday morning, claiming that the furor would help him flip Minnesota next year.
Now however you may feel about the Pledge, these tweets are evidence that Trump’s priorities and moral compass are both fundamentally warped. How’s that, you ask? Well, contrast this with his comparatively restrained response to the smoldering furor over Acosta’s handling of a plea agreement with Epstein in 2008.
Trump went out of his way to praise Acosta for his performance as Labor Secretary, and claimed he felt “very badly” for him. Really, Mr. Trump? What about Epstein’s victims? They were denied justice as a result of a plea deal crafted by Acosta, who was then the U. S. Attorney in Miami. Rather than the potential life sentence he would have faced at trial, Epstein only got 13 months in county jail after pleading guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution.
Never mind that prosecutors identified at least 36 victims, and that Epstein persuaded some of them to recruit other girls for him. And never mind that Acosta couldn’t be bothered to notify those victims–a move that a judge deemed illegal earlier this year. Even without this to consider, this plea deal breached every standard of decency that is known.
In any normal presidency, regardless of party, there would be only one acceptable response. The president would have condemned this in the strongest possible terms. He would have then called Acosta in and given him an ultimatum–resign by the close of business or be fired. Not so with Trump. He says he’s looking “very closely” at the matter. What’s there to review, Mr. Trump? The facts are beyond dispute.
It turns out that Trump’s mealy-mouthed take on the Acosta/Epstein imbroglio happened mere hours after he threw what amounted to a 280-character grenade at the St. Louis Park city council. In other words, Trump needed only mere hours to prove, once again, that his moral compass–assuming he has one–is severely warped.
Trump’s diehard supporters may think he is doing what they elected him to do by putting the heat on St. Louis Park. But it says a lot that he can find the time and the energy to “own the libs,” and can’t find the time or the energy to condemn Acosta’s actions and demonstrate that there is no place in his White House for those who coddle pedophiles and perverts like Epstein. So now we can prove, literally down to the hour, that Trump is neither a leader nor a real man.
