This week’s Saturday Night Live featured an amusing movie trailer-like skit praising the yet-to-be-named Republican hero who will save America from the fascist disaster of Donald Trump. It was a call to action and a challenge, recognizing that, given the Democratic Party’s minority status, it’s going to take a Republican to finally step up and stop the madness. Tragically, there are no “brave” Republicans. They don’t exist.
From Mitt Romney begging at Trump’s table like a whipped dog, to “Little” Marco Rubio’s eventual conversion, the Republican Party is all aboard the Trump train. Why? Because they have bigger fish to fry than preventing the fascist takeover of America – like stripping health care from millions of people, restoring aristocracy, destroying unions and poisoning the environment.
Like Grover Norquist said, “Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen.” That he’s may have colluded with a foreign dictator to become President… well… the same people who used their role as “representatives” investigating Benghazi to score political points with their base are saying “move along. Nothing to see here.” Think about that. Republicans get elected to “represent the people.” Instead, they use their positions, not to find out how to prevent another attack, but to attack political enemies and put on a show for the cameras, in order to keep the people they pretend to represent angry and divided. This isn’t just me speculating about their motives. Republicans openly admit it.
As President Twitter Troll retweets propaganda from the right wing web in an effort to distract from the very real possibility that his administration functions as an arm of a foreign power, the denial, defense and/or deafening silence from the Republican Party proves everything I’ve said for years. Bluntly, Republicans loathe American democracy and are actively working from the inside to destroy it. After all, democracy gets in the way of their mission to further empower the rich and powerful, so they really would much rather do without it.
A petro-state oligarchy modeled by Putin is much more manageable for them. This is why Rand Paul says “it makes no sense for Republicans to investigate Republicans.” Whether they’re committing treason or not. Don’t let the (made in China) American flag lapel pins and teary-eyed renditions of “America the Beautiful” fool you. Today’s Republicans are doing the bidding of their masters in the moneyed elite.
While John McCain is supposed to be critical of Trump, his denunciations are tepid at best. The “Maverick,” is back? Puhleaze. McCain told CNN, “I’m the one that said Ronald Reagan shouldn’t send Marines to Afghanistan, I’m the one that said Donald Rumsfeld should be fired, I’ve said the general in Afghanistan should be fired… Look, I have done what I have done right for this country under Republican and Democrat presidents. I will continue to do so. This is not a departure from the way I’ve conducted myself in the United States Senate.”
While McCain toots his own horn, let’s not forget that he’s the one who catapulted Sarah Palin onto the national stage. We’re supposed to believe he thought she was the best person to put her one 76-year old heartbeat away from being leader of the free world. From an ignoramus like Palin to a megalo-ignoramus like Trump is a stone’s throw. Where’s that supposed “Maverick” when we really need him? One might think that a fascist who thinks that torture is “strength” would be a deal breaker for McCain, not to mention Trump’s insult about preferring his “war heroes” to be people who “weren’t captured.”
Take any of Trump’s outrageous lies, his refusal to release his tax returns, and the troubling connections of his inner circle, and imagine them coming from the Obama Administration and we can the dangerous double standard at play. In response, the Republican chorus of silence is deafening. So now we have a so-called “businessman” so-called President who pretends to be for the “forgotten workers” while he plays footsie with Putin, empowers banksters, entrenches oligarchy, and spreads conspiratorial lies meant to cultivate the people’s mistrust in the very system our founders fought a revolution to create. The Republican Party defends this as “this is what he said he would do.”
When asked on “Meet the Press” whether the President has a “credibility problem,” neutered Marco Rubio repeated the Republican Party line that “Trump was elected” and “is doing what he said he’s going to do.” The fact that he actually garnered LESS votes than Hillary Clinton and “won” a historically narrow Electoral College victory is incidental. The fascist tactics and foreign collusion isn’t even a blip on the Republican Party radar.
When a minority of ideologues inflict their agenda the majority who voted against it, while claiming popular support, “We The People” are under thumb of tyranny.
Despite casting more votes across the board for Democrats, in the Presidential, Senatorial and 2012 House elections, the American People are once again at the mercy of an immoral gaggle of self-serving sycophants known as the modern Republican Party who are trying to roll back every New Deal advance of the twentieth century that created the American middle class to begin with.
The majority of Americans want Social Security and Medicare strengthened and expanded. The majority of Americans want the ACA “fixed,” not repealed. The egalitarian society that Americans send their representatives to Washington to protect is under systematic attack by the very so-called representatives sent to protect it. As they work to strip Americans of their health care, remember… Republicans are the very antithesis of patriotism. You see, the word “patriot” comes from the Latin “patriota.” So, one cannot claim to “love” their country, while turning their back on the people in it. It is the exact opposite of “patriotic” to leave your fellow countrymen behind.
Organized money have captured government and turned it, once again, into an appendage of their affairs. While he’s tricked his dupes into believing he’s the cure, Donald Trump is the symptom of that disease. But he’s not the only thing making us sick.
The same party that conspired on the night of President Obama’s first inauguration to obstruct any attempt to fix our problems inherited from Bush, causing more pain to the American people for political gain, are shamelessly silent about the dangerously mentally unfit, emotionally unstable, self-serving agent of a foreign dictator simply because he gives them their best chance of kicking people off health care, poisoning the environment and funneling more money to the top. Trump may be following the fascist playbook to a tee, but if waiting for a Republican “hero” to stop him is like “Waiting for Godot.”
America was a crazy progressive idea that “We, The People” could organize a government that promoted the GENERAL WELFARE above the welfare of the King and his aristocracy. We’re going to have to pledge our lives, fortunes and sacred honor to each other, yet again, in order to save it.
Watch the Saturday Night Live call for a Republican “hero.” Good luck to us all.
