For certain elements of the religious right, the only thing that comes second to bullying their followers into bowing down to Donald Trump is believing they can order Mother Nature around. For instance, last fall Lance Wallnau famously commanded Hurricane Irma to turn away from Florida and churn out into the Atlantic Ocean. As we all know, Irma didn’t listen. She rolled across the Florida Keys and blasted nearly everything east and south of Panama City with strong winds.
But that didn’t stop Wallnau from claiming victory. He actually claimed that his prayers and those of his followers had actually altered Irma’s path. No, this isn’t snark. Watch here, courtesy People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch.
For those who don’t know, it initially looked like Miami was going to get a direct hit. However, Wallnau claimed that his prayers caused it to turn toward the Everglades. That probably came as cold comfort to the people of Florida. After all, Irma caused at least $50 billion of damage in Florida, making it the costliest hurricane ever to hit the state. It also killed 84 people.
Well, this hurricane season, another so-called moral guardian is trying her hand at bossing around Mother Nature. Namely, Kat Kerr. Early Wednesday morning, Kerr took to Facebook to urge her followers to turn their prayers toward Hawaii and “take authority” over Hurricane Lane.
We take power over all the power of the enemy that would be using that hurricane in Hawaii to do any destruction and command the pressure to rise within the storm and crush the whole system. We command it to be downgraded until it is nothing, the winds to slow down and the rains to cease. We as Believers, are over the weather not under the weather. Just as Christ had authority over the storm, we too have authority over the storm in Hawaii.
Early Friday morning, Kerr took to Facebook again–this time to declare victory. She claimed that thanks to their prayers, Hawaii won’t get a direct hit. However, she reminded her followers, there was much to be done. She told everyone to pray that the storm turn west, “way away from the Hawaiian Islands.” She also directed them to pray for the pressure around the system to rise and stop the heavy rain.
One problem–it’s not working so well. For instance, the Big Island of Hawaii is getting absolutely drenched. Watch more details from CBS News here.
Roads across the island are heavily flooded; one spot got over 34 inches of rain. The White House has already issued an emergency disaster declaration.
Even though Lane has been downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, Hawaii is nowhere near out of the woods yet. Forecasters warn of high winds, four-foot storm surges, and heavy rain. And that’s even if the forecast holds and Irma turns west on Saturday morning.
It’s not been a good summer for Kerr. You may recall that earlier this summer, she tried to command the wildfires raging through California to stop–and failed.
A few weeks ago, she doubled down on her earlier claim that Trump was going to be the start of 24 years of God being in the White House. But Trump left no doubt that God was nowhere near the White House when he called Omarosa a “dog.”
And this week, federal prosecutors investigating Trump’s top fixer, Michael Cohen, literally brought their investigation to Trump’s doorstep. National Enquirer owner David Pecker and longtime Trump Organization chief financial officer Adam Weissenberg were granted immunity in return for giving information about their roles in keeping two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump from spilling the beans before the 2016 election.
All indications are that Pecker and Weissenberg’s flips forced Cohen himself to guilty to a litany of financial crimes and campaign finance violations. In so doing, Cohen admitted he’d arranged the payments on orders from Trump. All things considered, it’s no longer outlandish to wonder if Trump will even be a free man, let alone in the White House, by 2020. That would put it beyond any doubt that Kerr is a false prophet.
And now it looks like her attempt to save the Aloha State from Lane has fallen flat. Sorry, Kat–looks like your 0-for-3.
