The powers that be in the religious right like to hold themselves out as the moral guardians of the nation. But it has been amply established that their state of unbridled love for Donald Trump has revealed their concern for traditional values is nothing more than hot air.
Remember, when we learned that Trump openly reveled in degrading women, the religious right tried to convince us that it didn’t matter as much as ending abortion and rolling back marriage equality. They have remained steadfastly loyal to Trump even after he retweeted a meme showing him knocking Hillary Clinton down with a tee shot, and another meme depicting CNN as a bloody splatter on his wingtip. When Trump had no qualms about calling women who crossed him “dog” and “horseface,” they tried to convince us that he still had his Christian faith near and dear to his bosom.
But to hear the fundies talk, none of that matters. All that matters is that Trump isn’t just making America great again, but making America Christian again–primarily by appointing “righteous judges.” Under the circumstances, it was inevitable that Trump’s debauchery would rub off on a prominent fundie. Well, that may have finally happened. One of Trump’s loudest and most loyal fundie supporters thinks that a child conceived from rape and sexual assault ought to have love for the monster who attacked his or her mother.
Jesse Lee Peterson is one of the most obnoxious members of a very exclusive club–black conservatives who are all in for Trump. The outspoken black conservative pastor and counselor believes that the devil is your father if you oppose Trump. He believed that Trump had every right to call Omarosa a “dog.” As Peterson saw it, since Omarosa broke ranks with a man who helped her so much along the way, it was evidence she was “Satan’s daughter” and “evil to the core.”
The fact that a man who holds himself out as a man of God would find it even remotely okay to join in on degrading a woman would be reason by itself to question whether said pastor has any decency. But believe it or not, Peterson may have found a way to sink lower than that. On the Thursday edition of his radio show, he said with a straight face that if a man rapes a woman and gets her pregnant, the child should be taught to feel love for his or her sperm donor. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
Peterson was speaking with “Caleb,” who had been helping his girlfriend raise her now eight-year-old daughter for five years and wanted to marry her. The girl had been conceived after a rape, and naturally has almost nothing to do with her “father.” However, the girl and Caleb have grown very close in recent years, to the point that the girl calls her “Daddy.” Caleb hoped that if he could show his girlfriend “the right way to live,” they could marry.
Peterson’s response was immediate–“absolutely, no!” He claimed that step-parents can only cause problems for their kids because a child’s soul “yearns for a father, not a step-father or a step-mother.” He believed that if Caleb’s girlfriend was “a decent woman at all,” she should realize that he would only be in the way.
This came as no surprise to Caleb. After all, Peterson has long taken a very dim view of blended families. Back in 2017, he claimed that parents who remarry are “selfish” because they’re not considering the needs of their kids.
Apparently Peterson hasn’t considered the possibility that maybe, just maybe, those divorced parents want their kids to have a real father or a real mother–a good, solid man or woman who will love on them and be a positive influence. That’s especially true for parents who have had to endure abusive relationships. Indeed, I found that particularly insulting, having been in an abusive marriage. You mean to tell me that if that woman had given me children, I would have been “selfish” for wanting those kids to have a shot at having a real mother?
But Peterson apparently couldn’t content himself with denying Caleb’s girlfriend a chance to give her daughter a real father. He advised Caleb to tell that little girl to love the monster who did this to her mother.
Let her know that you’re not her father and that you apologize for getting involved with her mother. And that for her not to be angry and to love her father, her real father, and don’t believe anything that anyone has to say about him, so that she can love her father and she will grow up a peaceful young lady and she will have a good life.
So this little girl shouldn’t believe anyone who tells her how depraved her sperm donor was for attacking her mother? And that she should consider him her real father, even though he forfeited any right to have anything to do with her? If this is the kind of advice Peterson gives during his counseling sessions, we should fear for his clients.
Anyone who is wondering how these so-called moral guardians can continue to bow down to the most manifestly unfit president in recent memory now has part of their answer.
