It has been amply established that Donald Trump is the most morally unqualified man to occupy the White House in recent memory. It is equally evident that Trump has gone overtime to remake the Republican Party in his own vile image.
For instance, Alabama Congresswoman Martha Roby faced a stiff challenge in the Republican primary for her Montgomery-based seat. Roby’s main opponent in that primary, Bobby Bright–who underwent a chameleon-like transformation from Blue Dog Democrat to Trump-worshiping Republican–upbraided her for calling for Trump to get out of the 2016 race in the aftermath of the Access Hollywood tape. Watch here.
Roby ultimately won a runoff, more than likely assuring her of a fourth term in this congested-red seat. But it says a lot about the state of the GOP that a candidate at any level could even think he could get away with branding his opponent a traitor for calling out Trump’s disgusting and vile comments on that tape.
More recently, when Trump held a rally in Mississippi last month, he saw fit to take a cheap shot at Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who claimed that now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school. His two nominal hosts, Governor Phil Bryant and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, didn’t say a word.
We got another example on Tuesday, when one of the louder members of the legion of far-right podcasters propping up Trump saw fit to follow up Trump’s latest misogynistic cheap shot with a cheap shot of his own.
On Monday afternoon, porn star Stormy Daniels had her defamation suit against Trump thrown out. Daniels had sued Trump for tweeting that claim that a pro-Trump thug told her to keep quiet or else in 2011 “a total con job.” However, a federal judge found that statement was protected speech.
Trump reacted in typical fashion.
So once again, the president of the United States saw fit to hurl a degrading comment at a woman. The condemnation came in fast, hard, and from both sides of the aisle. For instance, Senator Ben Sasse, one of the few Republicans who has shown any inclination to stand up to Trump, called this tweet out for the vile pigweed that it was. Watch here.
On MSNBC’s “MTP Daily,” Sasse gave the only response that anyone with an iota of decency would give–such comments were “not the way men act.”
CNN’s Jake Tapper was slightly more restrained. He felt it best to let Trump’s latest degrading moment speak for itself.
Now who would have a problem with that? Well, right-wing podcaster Bill Mitchell, apparently. The impressario behind the rabidly pro-Trump YourVoice America YouTube network is outraged at the outrage over Trump’s attack on Daniels. Why? Wait for it–Mitchell doesn’t think Daniels is really a woman.
One has to wonder if Trump took over Mitchell’s Twitter feed, because this sounds exactly like something Mitchell’s messiah would spew. Dehumanizing? Check. Slut-shaming? Check. And this after Trump and his followers have tried to paint themselves as the last bulwark of civility against an angry Democratic mob?
Sadly, this isn’t all that surprising. Ever since Daniels broke her silence and claimed that she had an affair with Trump not long after Melania gave birth to Barron, the most common answer from Trump diehards has been to say that she shouldn’t be taken seriously because of her profession. That mentality goes all the way up to Trump’s legal team. Rudy Giuliani, for instance, claimed that Daniels doesn’t have a reputation to damage–a line tacitly endorsed by Trump himself.
As I write this on Wednesday night, Mitchell’s vile attack on Daniels has been liked 14,000 times and retweeted 5,600 times. But one of those retweets is at least as disturbing as the original tweet. Why? It came from teenage conservative activist CJ Pearson. We have receipts.
When 16-year-old Pearson isn’t trumpeting the Trump agenda on YouTube and Twitter, he’s a junior at Evans High School in Evans, Georgia, near Augusta, where he lives with his grandparents. It cannot be repeated enough–a 16-year-old high school junior sees fit to join in a campaign of degrading a woman for daring to cross the Almighty Trump.
Can you imagine what would happen if Pearson were to tweet or retweet something this vile about one of his female classmates? If I had been his grandfather, I would have been taken his phone away posthaste–and he would have a very hard sell to make to keep it from being smashed to bits. He should get the same treatment for this retweet. It’s even more reason why Mitchell should be ashamed of himself for slagging Daniels in the first place.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is why nothing Trump does is worth it. We have a president who revels in degrading women–and now some of his most diehard followers, even his youngest ones, are copying this vile behavior. This cannot be normalized.
