The religious right would like you to believe that they just want a place at the table for people of faith. But whenever they think no one’s paying attention, they take off their masks and reveal that they actually want to put the Constitution and its freedoms in the shredder. If it were up to them, their foes would be presented with a stark choice–convert or perish.
We got treated to one of those rare moments of honesty last week. One of Donald Trump’s loudest fundie cheerleaders openly wished that Trump could give his Democratic critics the same treatment that dissidents get in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
It’s no secret that the religious right has gone all-in for Trump, despite the almost daily outrages coming from this White House. But even by religious right standards, Lance Wallnau is in a class by himself among fundie pastors and pundits who have bowed down to Trump.
This is a man who thinks God’s reputation could take a hit if Trump’s foes succeed in dumping him from office. He also believes that Trump’s foes are giving the devil an open door into their homes by speaking out against the Donald, and claimed that Robert Mueller’s investigation has put a demonic cloud over the White House.
But Wallnau may have really outdone himself on Wednesday, when he took to Facebook while at the airport to fly home from a seminar. He also mirrored it on his YouTube channel; watch here.
Like most covfefe drinkers, Wallnau has taken to warning his followers about the perils that could ensue if the Democrats take back the House–and with it, control of House committees. Wallnau seemed particularly unnerved at the prospect of one of Trump’s most relentless critics, Adam Schiff of California, becoming chairman of the Intelligence Committee.
Schiff has publicly vowed that if the Democrats win the majority, the Intelligence Committee will take a long, hard look at Trump’s businesses. To Wallnau, these “mindless, stupid investigation(s)” would only serve to diminish “our prestige among the nations that respect us.”
We’ve heard this before. The Trump diehards have spent the last two years wailing that Trump’s foes aren’t letting Trump do his job–and the nation is suffering for it. But then Wallnau’s commentary took a particularly sinister tone. He seemed to wish that Schiff and other Trump foes could pay a stiff price for their insolence.
You know, you would not see this in Russia. My gosh, you have somebody coming in on Putin, trying to blame him, claim he’s an incompetent moron, they’re done. They’re taken out back and shot. China? Never a negative word. It’s only in America where liberals destroy our prestige around the globe because they’re mad, because they don’t have power.
I had to listen to this twice in order to believe what I was hearing. Was Wallnau actually wishing that Trump’s foes could be disappeared, as is the case in a number of countries where opposition is barely tolerated, if not outright forbidden? It sure sounds like it.
It’s not the first time that Wallnau has openly praised Putin. This past spring, he openly admitted that Putin runs Russia like a crime boss, but believes he’s not as dangerous as liberals in this country. But it’s quite another thing to openly hope that Trump can snuff out criticism in the same manner as Putin.
But then again, it’s not all that surprising that Wallnau is applauding dictators. After all, he is one of the leading minds of the New Apostolic Reformation, an outright fascist offshoot of the religious right that believes Jesus can’t come back unless Christians take over the world and put down all resistance to them. Specifically, he maintains that Christians must take control of the “seven mountains,” or forces that influence our culture–especially the “mountain” of politics and government. His ideal government would look a lot like a Christianized version of Iran, the Taliban, or ISIS.
But Wallnau doesn’t want us to know that. That’s why this rare moment of honesty is very telling. He just forgot that when he went live that day, his followers weren’t the only ones watching.
