For all their flag waving, Republicans hate America. Don’t get me wrong… They like the LAND that comprises America for whatever natural resources can wrested from the ground, profited from, and discarded without care. The unfortunate rubes born on that land are merely tolerated – for the time being. Due to the system of government our Founding Fathers entrusted to us, Republicans have no choice but pretend they are working for these useful idiots – until they can actually permanently eliminate the “problem” altogether by somehow denying them the right to vote – and they’re working on it.
It doesn’t matter that in the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed,” in over 40 states, Republicans are trying to make it much more difficult for poor people, the elderly, students and minorities to vote – because those are people who typically vote Democratic.
Under the guise of tamping down on the mythical “voter fraud,” Republicans are purposefully attacking consistently Democratic-leaning constituencies.
Watch Rachel Maddow lay out the Republican Voter Suppression Strategy for 2012 in her must-see report:
Thankfully, establishment Democrats seem to be talking about this as well.
Bill Clinton recently said, “There has never been in my lifetime, since we got rid of the poll tax and all the Jim Crow burdens on voting, the determined effort to limit the franchise that we see today.”
Clinton isn’t the only Democrat talking about this. Donna Brazile wrote in an email to supporters trying to raise money for the Democratic Governors Association’s Voter Protection Project. “In Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Texas, extremist governors or legislatures are willing to violate people’s civil rights in order to win elections.”
Jennifer Page wrote for the Center for Media and Democracy, about the voter suppression bills sweeping the nation
“An editorial in the New York Times linked this wave of voter suppression to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). On ALEC’s website, there is a “Voter ID Act” link that is only accessible to members. But Campus Progress obtained a copy of the ALEC Voter ID Model Legislation that provides a roadmap to this coordinated assault on voter rights. Most of the bills being debated require a specific list of state-issued IDs to vote, like a birth certificate, or in Texas, a handgun license. Some end “same day” voter registration often used by students. In others, college student IDs are often not acceptable or other hurdles are created. College students were a key demographic in President Obama’s successful 2008 campaign.
Many of the states seeking to enforce these new voter ID bills have newly-elected Republican governors and legislators, including Florida, Ohio, Maine and Wisconsin. This attack on the right to vote comes on top of attacks on public sector unions in these states that makes it harder for unions to bargain, collect union dues and organize political activities.
Not so ironically, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) was co-founded by Paul Weyrich, the “father” of the right-wing movement, co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, Moral Majority and other anti-American, pro-Economic Royalist organizations. In this clip, he tells a gathering of Christians that he want’s to prevent people from exercising the right our Founders fought, bled and died for – the right to vote.
Weyrich states, “Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome — good government. They want everybody to vote. I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”
Given the fact that Republican policies have absolutely nothing to offer 99% of the population, and Republicans can’t win an election without engaging in dirty tricks, we can be sure to expect the corporate-think-tank-written suppression tactics to escalate as we get closer to the 2012 election.
