They say, that in order to keep history from repeating itself, we must learn from our mistakes. Well whoever “they” are, I can confidently say Republicans “they” are not.
And so here we are, in the second week of 2017, two days after yet another tragic public shooting in Florida, at Ft. Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport. And five more lives have been taken, under the understatedly terrible leadership of Republican Governor Rick Scott. A man whose latest crime against his constituents includes using a moment to comfort his state, as a PR move for the GOP’s HUGE orange problem. Instead of calling upon the help of the actual POTUS actually capable of currently providing federal assistance!
And speaking of crimes against humanity, why wasn’t the Republican led Congress ever accused of being “accessories to murder”? Was failing to pass 100 proposals for federally imposed gun control laws, since 2011 not enough to qualify? The same year that Republicans took over the majority in the Senate and the House, under President Obama. The same year that public shooting went from every 6 months on average, to every two months. Actually following the shooting in Orlando, the Los Angeles Times reported:
The Republican-led Senate on Monday [June 19th, 2016] voted down proposals to bar gun sales to terrorism suspects…” the article continued, “The Senate similarly blocked new restrictions on gun sales after the 2012 massacre of 20 schoolchildren and six adults in Newtown, Conn., and the killing of 14 people in December in San Bernardino.
And that is made even more disturbing by the fact that today NBC News reported, that the FBI could’ve possibly done more to prevent the shooting from happening in the first place. Local officials say that Esteban Santiago, walked into the FBI office in his hometown of Anchorage, with a loaded magazine handgun, about two months ago. Officials told NBC News reporters that, “He insisted that the CIA was forcing him to watch ISIS videos”. He seemed “agitated”, and spoke of “terroristic thoughts”. So naturally they pawned him off on local police. The police did their duty, taking his handgun and driving him to a mental facility. However four days later he was both released, and given the gun back. Yes, the same gun.
Santiago now joins a list of people — including Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, alleged Manhattan bomber Ahmad Rahami and Boston marathon bombing planner Tamerlan Tsarnaev — whose troublesome behavior brought them to the attention of the FBI before they committed violent acts.
FBI officials are pushing back, saying that they don’t have the resources to track every single person that comes in daily. An unidentified senior FBI official said that the FBI sees, “50,000 terrorist tips a year, and conducts more than 15,000 assessments.”
Oh and just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Vox reported that days before the shooting, the Republican-led Florida Legislature were seriously considering a bill to possibly make Florida the 12th “open carry” state in the nation. “Open carry” or “Constitutional carry”, requires no certification, or permit for any gun holder not on a banned list, to have a gun in public. Vox outlines the bill’s function as such:
SB 140 repeals laws forbidding guns on college campuses, in airports terminals, and at government meetings.” Vox says that similar bills have failed in years prior, and following the recent tragedy that the basically the bill is up the air, for now.
So how could an “open carry” law affect air your travel? Currently according to their website, TSA allows firearms properly stored in checked luggage. Also, ammunition must be also properly stored in carry-on luggage. The baffling thing, however, is that there doesn’t seem to be any laws according to their site, restricting being able to carry weapons from state-to-state. So for example, someone from an “open carry” state, can bring their gun into a “concealed-permit”, or one of the almost extinct “no-carry” states. But that means that you still have a gun purchased by someone basically not required to have any training, or a permit, or basically any actual laws governing that they should actually be able to purchase a gun outside of the fact that they aren’t a terrorist. So what, when they get to another state with strict laws, then they are just on scout’s honor? Because they don’t scan your bag once you land, or take your gun out depending on where you’re flying to. In fact Esteban Santiago came from the “open carry” state of Alaska to the “concealed- permit carry” state of Florida. But since he wasn’t on a list, then I guess it never really mattered.
Currently, America leads the developed world in gun related deaths, including suicides, domestic, and police violence.
