A U.K. study found, children with low intelligence are more likely to grow up to be social conservatives and racists. Couple that with the scientific verification that conservatives have larger fear centers in their brains (amygdalas), and we’re dealing with a perfect storm of ignorance and cowardice infesting society courtesy of the right wing.
So, any attempt to right societal wrongs, nullify unconscious bigotries, and create a more egalitarian, more perfect union, is just the trigger right wingers need to lose their minds. So when The National Museum of Women in the Arts’s held an “Edit-a-Thon” writers’ meetup to help remove implicitly misogynist leanings in some Wikipedia entries, the so-called conservatives on Breitbart lost their minds.
We might think that a group constantly whining about “bias” would understand the importance of events such as these. But, of course not. Breitbart staff writer, Tom Ciccotta, who looks about ready to start shaving any day now, uses the common right wing tactic of putting everything in “scare quotes,” in order to give his fellow fascists permission to cocoon in their privilege. He writes that the “Edit-a-thon” is in response to the “gender gap” among Wikipedia editors. See! When you put quote around it, the “gender gap” doesn’t exist! Meanwhile, here in reality, Wikipedia’s own stats claim between 84-91.5 percent of Wikipedia editors are male. Otherwise known as a gaping wide gender gap. I know. I know. Facts, reality and math have a liberal bias.
In fact, the Wikipedia “Edit-a-thon” stemmed from the experience of a novelist who found herself facing a sexist backlash after pointing out some of Wikipedia’s implicitly sexist biases.
According to an article in the Washington City Paper, “Four years ago, novelist Amanda Filipacchi noticed that female writers were being moved from Wikipedia’s “American Novelists” category to a separate subcategory. In a New York Times op-ed, she wryly suggested that perhaps there should be another subcategory just for men. Within the next few days, angry Wikipedia editors responded by deleting information and sources from her personal Wikipedia page.
Despite the backlash, Filipacchi’s op-ed made a positive impact, and Wikipedia has since changed its rules about categorizing American novelists. But that doesn’t mean that sexism isn’t still a problem on the site. In fact, Wikipedia’s continued gender bias is the reason that the National Museum of Women in the Arts recently held an Edit-a-Thon to help train female editors and improve Wikipedia’s content about women and the arts.
The museum’s meetup on Saturday was part of a larger group of Art+Feminism Edit-a-Thons that take place around the world every March. The Smithsonian American Art Museum also will a hold an Art+Feminism Edit-a-Thon on March 25, and the University of Maryland will hold one on March 28. According to Sarah Osborne Bender, director of NMWA’s library and research center, her museum has participated in these Edit-a-Thons ever since they started in 2014.
“It’s a way for us to involve the community in addressing the gender disparity in the art world,” she says. “And as a librarian and an information professional, it’s a way to educate the public about such a popular resource and to show them that they could have responsible power in its creation and maintenance.”
It’s to be expected that the readers of a propaganda website named for a propagandist who was court ordered to pay damages to a victim he slandered in order to sow racial discord and division (as fascists do), cannot abide anything that challenges the privilege of the straight (acting) patriarchal, white power structure they feel sustains them. This is why they loathe affirmative action and perceive any attempt to create a more egalitarian society to be a literal threat to their very existence. The Breitbart comment thread was full of doozies. Here’s some of them…
If it’s not propping up patriarchy, it’s as “fake” as climate change!
I love how this one makes a screen name “BrainDamagedLibtard” while claiming to be a member of “civilized, sane society”
– and the rest of them soothe each other with the right wing greates hits.
I also love how they cheer Donald Trump while simultaneously accusing liberals “not caring” about “facts.” Keep in mind that the “facts” they’re referring to are the supposed “natural” inferiority of women.
Sweden again? Then we get the old “man hating” woman who “hates” men by the mere fact that she respects herself.
STILL waiting for MY SOROS money!
Yes, because when you respect yourself as a woman, you’re overthrowing western civilization.
We interrupt this misogynist meltdown to bring you some gay bashing. The curious part of the comment threads at Breitbart, we could easily interchange them with any article. They pretty much always say the same things.
Inherent biases are to be expected. Conscious, courageous and confidently secure human beings attempt to address them. Cowards, like conservatives, cling to them and want us all to pretend they doesn’t exist. Most likely due to their fear (as usual) if things are truly equal, we’d all see just how inadequate they truly are. Though, let me assuage their fear. We don’t need affirmative action programs or manufactured outrage over an “Edit-a-thon” to know how inadequate they are. That fact is coming through loud and clear.
We really need to stop calling Republicans “conservatives.” There’s nothing “conservative” about them. In truth, they’re regressives who can’t handle that the humanity continues to evolve without them.
