Next to George Soros and Nancy Pelosi, it seems that the deplorables’ favorite pet hate has been Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Ever since she upset ten-term incumbent Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for a district in the Bronx and Queens, Ocasio-Cortez has been the target of perhaps more smears than any congress(wo)man-elect has seen before he or she has actually been able to fill his or her seat.
Granted, Ocasio-Cortez had her share of stumbles before she formally took office on Wednesday. For instance, she once claimed that there is no upper middle class, and veered into hyperbole about the unemployment rate masking how many people work two jobs. But even allowing for that, some of the smears she’s faced have been way over the top.
For instance, in November, Laura Ingraham went into a meltdown over a picture Ocasio-Cortez took at freshman orientation with three other high-profile women of color elected alongside her–Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. What picture caused Ingraham to fill up with so much rage?
Ingraham called Ocasio-Cortez and her “squad” the “Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse.” Gee, most of us thought these were just four newly elected women sharing a barrier-breaking moment. Ocasio-Cortez, remember, is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Pressley is the first woman of color elected from Massachusetts, while Omar and Tlaib are the first Muslim women ever elected to Congress.
It continued on Wednesday, when Ocasio-Cortez helped Nancy Pelosi cement her return to the Speaker’s chair.
One has to think that the wingnuts are looking for ways to get their licks in. After all, they almost certainly know Ocasio-Cortez is going to grow old in this seat. She represents a swath of north Queens and the north Bronx that was once represented by 1984 vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro. Like almost all of New York City, this is safer-than-safe Democratic turf. It has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D+29–making it the 17th most Democratic district in the nation, but “only” the sixth most Democratic district in the Big Apple. When she took office on Tuesday, she became only the fifth person to hold this seat since 1945.
But it reached truly ridiculous levels just hours after the swearing-in, when right-wingers clutched their pearls over a video in which Ocasio-Cortez appeared during her days at Boston University. She and several of her classmates joined in a worldwide mashup of 1980s Brat Pack dance sets. Watch here.
In a since-deleted tweet, a Pizzagate/QAnon nutter railed about the latest evidence that the people of north Queens and the east Bronx were now represented by a “clueless nitwit.” Predictably, others joined in. Take Alex Jones’ chief cohort, Paul Joseph Watson, for instance.
But even more people laughed and pointed at this lame attempt at shaming. And at least one conservative blog wasn’t willing to join in on this latest hatefest–RedState.
When RedState contributor Andrea Ruth saw her fellow right-wingers go into meltdown over Ocasio-Cortez’ moves, she rightly pointed out that the video didn’t make her look like a “clueless nitwit.” Far from it–it made her look “relatable.” As she saw it, this was “the lamest yet” effort to smear Ocasio-Cortez, in part because it was “mean-spirited in its intent and self-defeating in its result.”
It turns out that a number of other conservatives have had their fill of looking for attempts to flame Ocasio-Cortez. Like Reagan Battalion, for instance.
As has become standard operating procedure, Ocasio-Cortez found a way to fill in the last word.
If attacking Ocasio-Cortez for her dance moves is the best the right can do, that’s not a good sign. Then again, it’s never a good idea to pick a fight with a Latina.
