The Republican Party is no longer a political organization. It’s a cult that’s infiltrated our government and is using its mechanisms to enact a greed centered agenda, while playing games of distraction for the benefit of their dupes. One of those games is a war on women, which includes their non-stop attack on Planned Parenthood. Sometimes, they even admit it.
To illustrate that they’ve passed “useless” and crossed into the realm of “dangerous,” Republicans are now conducting hearings and pushing policy based on the fabrications of deceptively edited videos released by the right wing, misogynist, anti-privacy, “Center for Medical Progress” in an attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. But… Like all conservative initiatives these days, right wing policies result in exactly the opposite of what they’re publicly promising to achieve.
Restricting Abortion Doesn’t Decrease Abortion – It Simply Kills Women
Republican “jobs” bills balloon unemployment their “clean air” bills leave us choking on polluted air, so… of course right wingers who claim to be against abortion consistently push policies that actually increase the number of abortions while blocking reality-based policies proven to reduce them. A recent survey of 197 countries found that “abortion occurs at roughly equal rates in regions where it is legal and regions where it is highly restricted.” The BBC reports,
“Every year, an estimated 70,000 women die as a result of unsafe abortions – leaving nearly a quarter of a million children without a mother – and 5m develop complications. In the developed world, legal restrictions did not stop abortion but just meant it was ‘exported’, with Irish women for instance simply travelling to other parts of Europe, according to Guttmacher’s director, Dr Sharon Camp. In the developing world, it meant lives were put at risk. ‘Too many women are maimed or killed each year because they lack legal abortion access,’ she said. ‘The gains we’ve seen are modest in relation to what we can achieve. Investing in family planning is essential – far too many women lack access to contraception, putting them at risk.’
…Western Europe is held up as an example of what access to contraceptive services can achieve, and the Netherlands – with just 10 abortions per 1,000 women compared to the world’s 29 per 1,000 – is held up as the gold standard. Here, young people report using two forms of contraception as standard.
Fact is, limiting access to abortion does not decrease their number, in simply ensures that women will needlessly die in back alleys. Right now, Texas women are ALREADY buying potentially unsafe abortion pills at outdoor flea markets and crossing the border into Mexico, searching back alleys for medical care.
Conservative Policies Increase Abortion Rates
To a Republican, life begins at conception and ends at birth. Not only do Republicans cut, block and defund every initiative to improve the health, education, employment options and quality of life of former-fetuses, while claiming to be against abortion, they consistently push policies that actually increase their numbers. According to a Guttmacher Institute report,
“In 2010, publicly funded contraceptive services helped women prevent 2.2 million unintended pregnancies; 1.1 million of these would have resulted in unplanned births and 760,000 in abortions.”
The so-called “pro-life” Republican agenda needs to derided for the unabashed hypocrisy it is. Politicus USA summarizes,
“…to be clear, Republican policies will lead to 66% increase in unintended pregnancies, unplanned births and abortions — and even more among teens. Citing a need for austerity, House Republicans have passed budgets that slash funds for family planning clinics and eliminate all federal support for Planned Parenthood and Title X. That’s zero dollars for family planning, even though current law (the Hyde Amendment among many other laws) prohibits health care providers from using federal money to finance abortions. Yes, that’s right. All of that ‘defunding’ talk has nothing to do with abortion, and Republicans know it, because it is against the law to use federal money to finance abortions. Federal money goes to health care services and family planning services for largely low income women.”
Conservatives aren’t “pro-life,” they’re pro-birth.
According to a Guttmacher Institute report, economic factors influence whether or not a pregnancy will be carried to term, yet Republicans fight family leave and maternity care… they fight living wages.. but love war, torture, rampant incarceration, the death penalty and “food insecurity” (AKA: starvation). As you can see, Republicans aren’t “pro-life.” They’re pro-birth. The Progressive Cynic breaks it down like this:
The vast majority of the demand for abortions in the United States is caused by several very specific factors: women seeking abortions tend to be carrying an unintended pregnancy and are unable to financially or logistically take care of the child once it is born. Because they lack the resources to take care of a child, these women often see abortion as their best option. The following is a summary of the results of a Guttmacher Institute report on this very subject: “The reasons most frequently cited were that having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work or ability to care for dependents (74%); that she could not afford a baby now (73%); and that she did not want to be a single mother or was having relationship problems (48%). Nearly four in 10 women said they had completed their childbearing, and almost one-third were not ready to have a child. Fewer than 1% said their parents’ or partners’ desire for them to have an abortion was the most important reason. Younger women often reported that they were unprepared for the transition to motherhood, while older women regularly cited their responsibility to dependents.”
“I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.”
Progressives Policies Decrease Abortion
The Progressive Cynic continues:
…In order to make it easier for pregnant mothers to get through their pregnancies, universal and government-funded support programs for pregnant mothers are effective. By supporting pregnant women with medical assistance, education, and the guarantee of paid leave, we can reduce the strain that a pregnancy will cause women and make it much easier for them to consider going through with their pregnancy—this, in turn will reduce abortion rates.
You see, next to an empowered working class, there’s nothing Republicans fear more than autonomous women. Attacking safe abortion services is a way to appeal to low information voters, making them stupid enough to vote against their own economic interests. Meanwhile, every Republican policy is proven to increase the numbers of abortion.
Fact is, if Republicans REALLY wanted to reduce abortion there’s one thing they can do – vote Democratic.
