Donald Trump’s cell phone security is about as effective as his daily exercise regime. So that’s somewhere between non-existent and relaxed to the point of near horizontal. Yet despite that, Trump does rather have something of an interest in gymnastics.
Our 45th Commander-in-Chief sports two ‘phones.
The first is for his Twitter outbursts to both keep his “base” suitably charged up and also to ensure that his legal team’s palms never leave their faces for too long.
The second is for the humdrum tedium of making regular ‘phone calls to the likes of other world leaders, political players and bigly business types. You know, the stuff that gets in the way of a yet another round of golf.
Trump has been advised to strengthen the security features of both of his ‘phones in the interests of national security. But to not avail. Apparently, Trump rejects having ‘phone security measures in place as being “too inconvenient.”
Experts have weighed in on this and identified that the potential for security breaches are real. Seemingly, Trump doesn’t care and carries on regardless.
So where is the rest of the GOP on this potential security issue? Particularly so when taking into account the cry of “But her emails.” Remember how much Republican air-time was devoted to Hillary Clinton’s alleged email transgressions in the run-up to the 2016 Presidential election? Bizarrely, it’s an issue that still smolders within the GOP to this day, nearly two years later.
Unsurprisingly, it’s an overall Republican shrug of the shoulders when Trump’s communication security risks are brought to their highly selective attention.
Republican Senator for Maine, Susan Collins, for example, at the very epicenter of American politics, chatter and generally being in the Washington know, offered the underwhelming take of “not having heard anything about it.”
Meanwhile, Republican Senator Jim Risch of Idaho felt that the President was “sophisticated” enough to know about what he should be discussing on a secured Presidential telephone line and what he shouldn’t. Surprising, as Trump wasn’t sophisticated enough to know that he was being picked up by a hot mic on the Hollywood Access bus. Maybe he’s grown into it in recent years, like so:
The very embodiment of sophistication.
This GOP meh-ness about Trump’s telecommunications security short-falls should come as no surprise to anyone.
That’s because we are talking about the party that spends swathes of time trying to square circles and perform endless gymnastic style policy back-flips and somersaults to justify Trump’s continued tenure in the White House, simply because he pretends to be a Republican.
Who remembers not so long ago the mass Republican scratching of heads when Trump, post yet another mass shooting, suggested that guns be seized first and then due process followed thereafter? That snap, crackle and pop noise was the sound of a thousand Republican spines splintering as they tried to back-flip their way out of that particular one.
Don’t expect to hear “But his ‘phones” any time soon.
