It has been amply established that Donald Trump is the most unfit and unqualified president in recent memory. But you wouldn’t know that if you were a follower of the religious right. For the better part of three years, the nation’s so-called moral guardians have insisted that God himself chose Trump to rebuild this nation. Indeed, to hear some of them talk, Russia didn’t hack the election–God did.
In part because Trump has made clucking noises they like, the religious right seems to be more than willing to ignore Trump’s outrageous behavior both on the stump and on Twitter. After all, it seems, all that matters to them is that Trump isn’t just making America great again, but making America Christian again. From the looks of it, Trump’s concern about “winning” at all costs seems to have rubbed off on the fundies. To hear them talk, though, he’s just fulfilling God’s plan to rebuild this country.
For at least one diehard Trumpvangelical, however, it seems a lot more has rubbed off from Trump than just “winning.” That would be Jesse Lee Peterson, a pastor who is one of the loudest and most obnoxious members of a very exclusive club–black conservatives who are all in for Trump. Peterson’s loyalty to Trump runs so deep that he believes the devil is your father if you don’t support the Donald. He also believed Jeff Flake was “evil” for wanting to protect Robert Mueller’s investigation during the waning days of his Senate tenure.
But it seems that Peterson is so loyal to Trump that he has picked up on some of his dear one’s more deplorable traits. Specifically, like Trump, Peterson has no qualms about degrading women. We saw that last fall, when he blew a gasket at Omarosa for turning on Trump. He believed that Omarosa wasn’t just a “dog,” as Trump called her. Nope–as Peterson saw it, she was a “dirty dog” and “Satan’s daughter.”
This would be outrageous by itself. But this is coming from a guy who holds himself out as a pastor. And on top of that through his Los Angeles-based nonprofit, the Brotherhood Organization for a New Destiny, Peterson claims to make it his life’s work to “rebuild the family by rebuilding the man.” So does that mean “rebuilt” men should have no problem using degrading and hateful language about women? It’s a fair question.
Well, earlier this week, Peterson gave us yet another reason to ask that question. Earlier this week, porn star and former Trump mistress Stormy Daniels announced she’s taking a whirl at stand-up comedy. Watch coverage from KTRK-TV in Houston here.
Daniels is doing a one-night engagement at a Houston comedy club. But it’s not the first time she’s given this a go.
You would expect that this would not get a good reception in Trumpland. But even by those standards, Peterson’s response was outrageous–and for want of a better term, deplorable.
Peterson was reprising this smear Trump hurled at Daniels in October after her defamation suit was tossed out.
In turn, this was picked up by a number of Trump’s followers.
It says a lot about these Trump diehards that they considered it even remotely acceptable to hurl degrading language at a woman, regardless of what they may think of Daniels. But it cannot be stated enough–this is being picked up by a pastor, and one who claims to “rebuild” men.
It’s even more outrageous when you consider that Peterson has faced almost no blowback for this. Imagine if, say, Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson hurled a degrading slur at Melania or Ivanka. The condemnation would be well deserved.
If this is how a man “rebuilt” by Peterson sounds, it sounds like BOND is long overdue for a date with the wrecking ball.
