Reporters and bloggers who turn the hot lights on the far right have a dangerous job. Whenever a white nationalist or white supremacist gets exposed for the hate merchant that he is, that person will do absolutely anything to silence his critics. For instance, far-right trolls have resorted to mass-reporting the Twitter and Facebook posts of those turning the hot lights on them, hoping to bludgeon their critics into silence by gaming the algorithm.
The latest victim of this tactic was Michael Edison Hayden of the Southern Poverty Law Center. He briefly had his Twitter account locked last week after revealing that the bottom-feeders who burned down a training center for civil rights activists spray-painted the symbol of the Iron Guard, a notorious Romanian fascist outfit. Hayden revealed that the man who shot up a mosque in New Zealand used the same symbol.
And yet, Twitter somehow thought doing so amounted to an attempt to “silence another person’s voice.” Twitter only came to its senses in the face of a massive outcry.
What makes this all the more obscene is that some of the very people Hayden and others are working to expose are able to spew their bile more or less with impunity. Case in point–Rick Wiles of TruNews, who has become perhaps the most virulent anti-Semite on the religious right.
Wiles falsely claims to be a pastor. Why “falsely”? Well, no real pastor would blame Jews for efforts to decriminalize homosexuality around the world or accuse Jews of “crapping on the country” by causing all of this country’s ills.
And no real pastor would even suggest that the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” one of the most notorious anti-Semitic tomes ever produced, is accurate. No, this isn’t snark. Watch here.
And yet, despite being reported to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other platforms, Wiles is still around. And yet, people like Hayden risk having their accounts locked for exposing this garbage. What’s wrong with this picture?
If there was any doubt that it is long past time for Wiles to get the boot, it was erased in the last few days. This hate merchant masquerading as a pastor saw fit to jump down the throat of prominent conservative commentator Ben Shapiro because–horrors!–Shapiro is Jewish.
On Friday’s edition of TruNews TV, Wiles had a major beef with those who support Shapiro, particularly Christian conservatives. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
Wiles claimed that any Christian conservative who supports Shapiro is “spiritually schizophrenic,” since Shapiro doesn’t believe he’s the son of God. Therefore, Wiles said, Shapiro has the “spirit of Antichrist.”
Not surprisingly, Wiles was relentlessly pilloried from both the left and the right over the weekend. Among those pointing at Wiles and laughing was Ben Gray of “The Blaze.” Wiles got a clip.
Like the hate merchant that he is, Wiles responded by googling down on Tuesday. In a two-part response, Wiles ramped up his attacks on Shapiro, blowing all sorts of dog whistles along the way.
Watch part 1 here.
And watch part 2 here.
Wiles claimed that he was merely responding to Shapiro supposedly mocking Jesus. As he saw it, he was merely calling out someone who “maligns and blasphemes Jesus Christ,” and therefore he was “obligated to rebuke him.”
But Wiles’ idea of rebuke veered into some pretty sinister territory. He argued that according to 1 John, Shapiro was a “liar” for not accepting Jesus as his savior. As Wiles saw it, Shapiro was merely doing “what many Jewish people have done for over 2,000 years.” He suggested that Shapiro had been bribed over the years to lie about the Resurrection–something that, according to Wiles, has been going on literally from the time Jesus came out of the tomb. He urged Shapiro to stop listening to his rabbis and accept Jesus as “(the) Messiah, the king of the Jews, the savior of the world.”
Yeah, Rick. Winning Jews over by insulting them and blowing dog whistles about them? That’s not exactly a winning strategy. Moreover, it’s hard to assume good faith on your part, given your past history as a merchant of anti-Semitic bile. The only difference between you and the likes of Richard Spencer and Andrew Anglin is that you hold yourself out as a pastor.
What makes it even worse is that Wiles still has a platform to do so despite a history of peddling this garbage, while those seeking to turn the hot lights on people like him frequently get locked out of Twitter for as a result of right-wing trolls gaming the system. So while a hate merchant like Wiles can spew this bile despite being reported time and again, those who call them out risk being gagged for doing so. It’s so damn obscene that there are almost no words to describe it.
