If Republican ideas were so good for America, they would reveal them outright, not cloak them with lies.
If this latest attempt to bring the United States in line with the rest of the world and provide health care as a right of citizenship, not a privilege of wealth, reminds us of anything, it is that the Republican Party has absolutely nothing to offer the middle class (and majority) of this country.
Democrats try to make health care accessible to ALL Americans, and Republicans counter with offensive images of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.
Since before the time Barack Obama took office, normal people (non-Republicans) have been forced to endure the incessant fear mongering and countless outright lies from the Right which only serves to coarsen and divide our society and thereby makes any attempt at true debate impossible. This is nothing new for Republicans as the image above can attest to. Republicans never appeal to the best in people, they appeal to the worst aspects of the human psyche. They thrive in a divided country and insist that they are the strong, authoritarian daddies who can save their cowardly followers from the boogie men they create.
The sad fact is that the constituency of the Republican Party is not the ignorant Teabaggers who, in misguided rage, board David H. Koch funded buses to rally for the very corporations who have rigged the game from the inside to make the American Dream impossible, but the billionaires and millionaires who have sent their Republican politicians (and some Democrats) to Washington with strict instructions to chip away at the very government regulations that were put in place to protect the American worker after the first Republican Great Depression – regulations that served to curb the incessant greed of Banksters, empowered the American manufacturing base and thus made the middle class possible.
The Reagan Revolution battle cry of “Government is the Problem” has proved to be the nail in the coffin of working America. In reality, it is a partnership of Government and “We The People” which made our great nation possible. Government is only the problem to those looking to ride the backs of “We The People” to the bank without restraint.
In spite of all the efforts of people like David H. Koch, Dick Armey and Rupert Murdoch; and with the help of the Internet, people are turning to alternative sources to get their news and no longer solely relying on the Corporate-owned media. Right wing LIES can be immediately de-bunked and exposed for what they are – desperate attempts of rich parasites to continue sucking profit from their weary hosts – the American people.
The closer we get to health insurance reform – however compromised – the more desperate and outrageous the Republican misinformation becomes. The sad thing is that lying used to be a job for the wingnuts of a party – not today.
Today, even the leadership of the Republican Party spread ridiculous conspiracy theories that, for example, disingenuously conflate any attempt to de-throne their wealthy benefactors in the insurance industry as an attempt to “kill grandma,” when in truth it is exactly the for-profit insurance company death panels which kill 45,000 Americans and bankrupt 1.5 million every year.
But the Republican Party knows that for many people their lies are taken on face value – they are not talking to the brightest bulbs – many of whom are already suffering serious moral character defects such as racism, homophobia, ignorance and fear of the “other.” Their 30-year war against public education has been successful in creating a pool of uneducated useful idiots to parrot whatever they are told as well as conflate any attempt to level the playing field for the proverbial “little guy” as something having to do with scary concepts they barely understand such as communism, socialism, fascism or whatever other dog-whistles their masters tell them to be afraid of.
Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “the arch of history is long, but it bends toward social justice.” The Health Insurance leeches know that if America ever truly lives up to the dreams of it’s founders and creates a just society that works for ALL, that their days are numbered. This is why they counter even the threat of real reform with such outrageous lies.
The Health Insurance leeches that have greased the palms of our so-called representatives and poured millions of dollars into our political system know that they MUST inject this poison into our body politic, because they know only a sick system will continue to allow them to exist.
As long as we are sick and fighting amongst ourselves, they will be allowed to exist. If we heal from the divisions and decide to once again become a government of “We The People,” not “Me The Person,” we would no longer accept a health system where a person can go bankrupt for committing the crime of getting sick or left to die without a fighting chance for lack of resources. As citizens in other countries know that today it may be a neighbor who is hit with a medical catastrophe, tomorrow it could be you.
As a people we must understand that a medical crisis can happen to ANYONE – any family at any time – if we have any claim on morality, we must join the rest of the world and create a social safety net that prevents the commoditization of our health and stops any more of those “uniquely American” medical bankruptcies.
All throughout this health care debacle we’ve heard the Democrats say, “if you like your health insurance, you can keep it…” The irony being that the only people who truly LIKE their health insurance are using some form of a socialized system such as Medicare or the VA. If you are in the private market and you “like your health insurance” I venture to guess that is because you haven’t actually had to — USE it. For example, my good friend has 2 plans – hers and her husbands – and STILL owes over $100,000 after having to spend a month in the ICU. Only in America will the stress of recovering from almost losing your life be coupled with incessant calls from bill collectors hired by health care providers who came to see you while you were unconscious!
The private health insurance system in this country is a FAILURE . We pay more than any other country but yield rather pathetic outcomes for the money spent, while leaving millions out and bankrupting millions more. In addition, private insurance companies don’t actually add value to our system but engage in a classic middleman racket, taking 30% off the top for CEO profit and billion dollar golden parachutes. Their death panels routinely decide who will live and who will die based on whether it is profitable enough to heal them.
A system this sick can only exist in a sick society.
The arch of history bends towards justice, as MLK said. This is why we have been under incessant assault by Republican and Insurance Company fear tactics and lies.
There is a real rage out there for real reasons. Eventually, the Reagan Revolution will be seen for what it was – an outright assault on the middle class – and the Teabagging monster that the Republicans created will turn on its master.
[nggallery id=1] It is a testament to the liberal heart that when all is said and done, even Glenn Beck following idiots will benefit from the very initiatives they are currently brainwashed into thinking have something to do with taking their freedom away.
In reality, the people of this country are not free if they are living one illness away from bankruptcy. We are not free if we can’t leave a job or venture into creating our own business if we are afraid to lose health insurance. Unfortunately, Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not live to see his “Economic Bill of Rights,” which included “the right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;” come to fruition.
If President Obama channels his inner FDR, and tackles our economic recovery from the bottom up, we may have a chance.
While the normal people of this country (non-Republicans) fight to create a more perfect union, the corporate puppet masters who own congress will continue to rally their mouth-breathing base who are too stupid to know that they are being manipulated into wanting “their country back” from the African American President their fellow citizens legally elected to help protect the Teabaggers from the exploitations of the very corporations they loudly rally to protect.
The more outrageous the Republican attacks and lies, the more we can rest assured that we are on the right track, doing what’s right for America.
