From the moment that Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un ended their summit in Singapore, it was painfully obvious that the Con Man-in-Chief had gotten conned himself. For one thing, that precious promise Kim supposedly made to give up his nuclear arsenal came at a stiff price. Trump unilaterally ended joint military exercises with South Korea–without bothering to tell anyone in Seoul or at the Pentagon.
We’ve since gotten strong indications that promise was an empty one. Just two weeks after the summit, satellite images showed North Korea was actually upgrading a facility used to make weapons-grade nuclear material. Watch coverage from CNN here.
On top of that, intelligence officials discovered in late June that Pyongyang was actively hiding elements of its nuclear program.
Sunday’s edition of The Washington Post reported that Trump is privately stewing over the lack of progress since the summit. But if he’d actually listened to people who actually know what makes North Korea tick, he would have seen this coming. And if he’d actually read the joint statement, he would have seen that there was no actual agreement to denuclearize.
It’s more and more apparent that Kim’s supposedly precious promise to get rid of his nukes only exists in Trump’s mind. If there was any doubt this was the case, it was put to rest on Wednesday. Radio Free Asia, a U. S. government-supported broadcaster that acts to counter the propaganda-laden “news” in North Korea and much of Asia, revealed that the top leadership of North Korea has no intention of getting out of the nuclear business.
A source based near the Chinese border learned that the Central Committee of North Korea’s Communist Party–nominally, the legislative branch of the party–convened a meeting of top party and business leaders to “deliver policy…regarding the current political situation.”
That source told RFA’s Korean service that the last speaker revealed that the Central Committee considers the nuclear program “a precious legacy” inherited from “the late leaders”–namely, Kim’s grandfather, “Great Leader” Kim Il-sung, and his father, “Dear Leader” Kim Jong-il.
Anyone who knows anything about North Korea knows that the Central Committee was merely ratifying a decision already made by “Dear Respected.” As the Central Committee (read: Kim)–saw it, “if there is no nuclear, there is death.”
According to RFA’s source, the announcement took a number of the gathered officials by surprise. They couldn’t tell whether Kim believes nukes are too “precious” to be given up, or are simply a bargaining chip in future negotiations. But it sounds like Kim made his intentions clear when he declared that death is the only alternative.
It also revealed a surprising breach in a country where Kim’s word is the law. A number of people believed Kim had gone back on his word to Trump and the international community. But there was already a strong indication that no such word was ever given.
It’s inconceivable that Trump isn’t aware of this Central Committee meeting. After all, he’s gotten plenty of other indications that his triumphant summit has turned into a fiasco. There’s no two ways about it. The man who has spent the better part of three years taking this country for a ride got taken for a ride in Singapore–and bigly.
