By today’s standards it might be safe to say most everyone in America has heard some variation of the slogan God! Guns! Guts! Glory!
Depending upon which side of the aisle one sits on regarding the gun violence epidemic in this country it might also be safe to say that slogan is contentious…maybe even a little bit in your face contentious.
There is a website called God, Guns, Guts, Glory. There are also multiple social media pages by the same name. Some leave guts out. Maybe that’s a good thing – could be kind of gross, eh?
Breaking the title down into its four components and talking about each component on an individual basis can be even more contentious as far as I can tell.
The only God I’ve ever seen on any of the websites or social media sites claiming the slogan above as their title appears to be the Christian God, though. No God of anyone else – just the Christian God.
So, let’s start with GOD – Christian GOD!
This deity has, according to the Bible, been kind of a genocidal maniac at times. I mean, he (or she) has ordered the deaths of thousands when he (or she) gets really angry. Spare no one, not even women and children! Kill ‘em all!
And yet, in Sunday school, Bible School, and church services Christians are taught that this deity is kind, benevolent, and will save us if we follow him (or her).
Then, in the very next breath, we’re told don’t you dare follow any other God or there’ll be HELL to pay!
Well, DAMN, but that just kind of rankles now, doesn’t it? If it doesn’t, it probably should. After all, envy just happens to be one of the seven deadly sins. Christian God isn’t envious of other Gods, is he (or she)? If it’s good for us, shouldn’t Christian God also follow his (or her) own rules? I mean, c’mon!
But I digress.
How many Gods are there? How…many…Gods…are…there? Shall we say that number is in the thousands?
Holy crap! How can we follow only one God when there are so many Gods to choose from?
I’ve been told in no uncertain terms there is only one God – Christian God. Remember “you shall have no other Gods before me” of Ten Commandments fame? If that’s true, then why do so many people in so many places, of so many ethnicities, of so many cultures, of so many denominations, of so many sects worship Gods other than Christian God?
Adding to that confusion by pointing out that Allah, Yahweh, and Christian God are all the same God, the God of Abraham, and what we have here is a failure to communicate between and amongst faiths, denominations, and sects.
Could it possibly be that the problems we see today regarding religious extremism are part and parcel of that failure to communicate? Might that failure to communicate not only be between faiths, but also denominations and sects within those faiths?
It’s already been noted in previous blog posts there are somewhere between thirty to forty thousand denominations classified as part of the Christian religion worldwide.
What about Islam?
Muslims apparently don’t go by the word denomination. Rather, they have sects. There are only five Islamic sects. Seems a little odd, doesn’t it? Christianity: up to 40,000 denominations. Islam: five sects.
Let’s see how those of the Jewish faith compare. Doggone it! They don’t have denominations either. They have sects too, but only five Jewish sects at that.
What’s wrong with that picture? Nothing, really. Numbers mean nothing in the final analysis. What matters is ideology and rigid dogma. In the end it is people who write and interpret religious documents – not Christian God, not Islamic God, not Jewish God, not any of the Gods anyone else worships. Could it be that the people who write and interpret religious documents are the problem? After all, they are only human.
Add weapons of all kinds, including guns, into the mix, and we’re arguably left with a potentially toxic mix of dangerous extremist groups within every religion of the world.
