A few days ago, a teacher in Iowa would have faced a dilemma if he/she had been armed.
The gun’s safety was on. If it hadn’t been on, we’d likely be having a different conversation.
But the safety was on.
That presents a potential dilemma in this incident – if that teacher had been armed, would they have been emotionally and psychologically able to respond with lethal force to that 12 year old student.
Don’t roll your eyes.
Don’t give me a ‘DOH’ as if it’s a given because it isn’t…a given, that is.
People say they’d do it, but if push came to shove….that’s a whole different ballgame.
This story piqued my curiosity as to why it wasn’t garnering more coverage.
A Google search of 12 year old boy pulls gun on teacher iowa resulted in only one national news outlet running this story that I could find – the Washington Post, and that story consisted of a short video news clip…nothing more.
There were many local news outlets that ran the story, but national news pretty much ignored it from what I could see.
The NRA’s silence on this incident has been deafening. Color me not surprised in the least.
But I digress.
Given major media outlets’ silence on this incident, it might be safe to say this is the kind of story that hits the airwaves and fades away just as fast.
That bothered me. It bothered me so much that I decided to post a tweet about it back on September 9:
Since then, it has received 3,642 likes, 1,025 retweets, and 279 comments.
I didn’t expect that to happen.
Up until this tweet, I’d never gotten much of a reaction to anything I put out there or to anything I’d retweeted. To say I was a bit surprised by the conversations swirling around this particular tweet would be an understatement.
The tenor of the tweets was mostly thoughtful…even respectful. But there were detractors, as well. Here are a few of the more notable ones:
I wonder where I came close to saying this teacher “deserved to die more than the student attempting to murder him”.
Hmmm…where in my tweet did I mention a “moral code”?
Well, I guess I can accept your analysis that my “example is atrocious” even though I don’t agree with that assessment, but why the pejorative of “hello genius”?
And the beat goes on….
There were a whole lot of ‘what if’ comments regarding the safety being on. Conversely, there were also bunches of ‘what if’ comments regarding if the safety hadn’t been on. Here’s just one:
This comment is pretty representative of other similar ‘safety on/off’ comments, so it’s the only one I’ll share here. Every one of those comments might be overstating the obvious just a wee little bit.
I’m left scratching my head on that one…unless being “prepared” means packing heat, perhaps?
Although I did not present my tweet as a ‘moral dilemma’, this person went there anyway.
I guess I’ve been told, eh? What kind of research, specifically? Show your work, please.
I hope by now you, the reader, are beginning to see a pattern in these kinds of responses.
By the time I got to the last one above, I’d pretty much had it with the confirmation biases sans critical thinking and risk analyses on arming teachers, both pro and con.
The reality is my tweet was intended to pose a thought provoking ‘what if’ scenario in which an armed teacher is faced with a dilemma; whether or not they would be capable of using lethal force on a child if faced with that possibility.
As one respondent to my tweet said:
To me, this person’s offering is the most insightful of all.
I’ll leave off with that.
