Now that Trump’s tiny hands are around the neck of power, let’s never forget that Hillary Clinton beat Trump by almost 2.9 million votes. According to certified final election results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Hillary received 65,844,954 (48.2%) to Trump’s 62,979,879 (46.1%).
As the Washington Post put it, “Donald Trump will be president thanks to 80,000 people in three states.”
He didn’t “win” by a “landslide” nor does he have a “mandate” to inflict Paul Ryan’s Ayn Randian “better luck next life” agenda on us. In short, Twitler must be opposed at every turn.
“Though Trump has legal legitimacy, he totally lacks political legitimacy. He seized power through a cumulative set of actions that thoroughly undermine the integrity of the election outcome. These illegitimate actions include voter suppression engineered by the Republican Party; highly inappropriate and outrageous interventions in the election by the Director of the FBI; persistent demonizing and intimidation of a free press; and, most egregious, a deliberate attempt (openly encouraged by Trump himself) by a hostile foreign government to influence the election in his favor. Taken together, these actions fatally undercut the political legitimacy of Trump’s presidency.
He also lacks the moral authority normally associated with the Presidency. Trump’s deficiencies of character undercut any notion that he deserves moral or civic respect. His deep flaws have been on full exhibit before, during, and after the election campaign. These character failures are revealed in his blatant and persistent lies; the scapegoating of vulnerable groups; eight years as a birther; a disgusting history as a sexual predator and racist; and conflicts of financial interest so wide and deep that he will be impeachable on day one of his presidency…
It would be a grave error to ignore his political illegitimacy and lack of moral authority. Other elected officials, the media, and the citizenry at large have no obligation to afford him the slightest political respect. Rather, the next four years should be a time of resistance and outright obstructionism. Opponents of Trump should be at least as aggressive in challenging the political legitimacy and moral authority of his presidency as Republicans were in disrespecting President Obama, whose political legitimacy and moral authority were beyond reproach.” Read Altman’s entire piece at the Huffington Post.
Resistance is MANDATORY
When Donald Trump follows his calls to “heal a divided nation” by tweeting self-aggrandizing lies about his “landslide” and his “enemies,” we know that the worst thing we can do is play along and pretend he’s legitimate. We must never normalize Trump. We must resist him mercilessly and obstruct his fascist, hate-mongering, warmongering, sickening agenda at every turn. Nothing less than the “grand experiment” in self-governance hangs in the balance.
As Casey Michel wrote for Quartz in his piece titled, “The warning signs of fascism that Americans should be watching for under president Donald Trump,”
“American democracy has stood relatively untested in the years following the Civil War. Now it may be facing its greatest challenge in roughly 150 years. We are witnessing the ascendancy of a demagogue who carries all the trappings of a post-Soviet strongman. And a series of men from Moscow to Minsk are ready and willing to welcome him into their brotherhood.”
Yes, Trump’s authoritarianism is rightfully alarming, but equally concerning should be the legion of enablers both inside and outside the Republican establishment who continue to ignore the warning signs as they eagerly grease his slide into power.
As the champions of functioning democracy, right about now we progressives should remind ourselves of the quote, (possibly misattributed) to Thomas Jefferson, “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” In short, we have no choice but take action.
As in America’s founding, progressives pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to each other to create a nation designed to promote the GENERAL WELFARE without having to beg the King and his aristocracy for a trickle. We again must make this pledge to save it.
It’s “all hands on deck,” now.
It is our duty to do something every day to resist Trump and the anti-American, anti-democratic, Republican agenda.
Call your Representative, call your Senator, join Bernie’s “Our Revolution,” write letters to the editor, speak up in our communities and online, and be prepared to take to the streets with fellow activists.
Most importantly, never give up. On the other side of this nightmare is the new Progressive Era. If we don’t concede an inch to Trump and his fascist minions, we just may be alive to enjoy it.
