DEVELOPING NEWS TO WATCH FOR
McConnell’s strategy to protect Pence from the Trump-Russia scandal.

If McConnell is to be successful in replacing Trump with Pence, under the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, McConnell must insure that Pence does not come under any further focus in the Trump-Russia investigation. McConnell has been informing the media at every opportunity that Pence stands willing to be interviewed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Now McConnell is taking steps which seem to further indicate how he is continuing to protect Pence. Recently NBC News reported that Mike Pence was willing to speak with Mueller anytime he is called upon to do so. Concurrent to this announcement the Wall Street Journal, quoted Pence as saying he would not entertain further discussions with Congress about his role in the scandal. So what is McConnell really up to? So why let Pence talk to Mueller but not to his own Republican controlled Congressional Committee? The explanation is simple. McConnell already has Pence’s narrow involvement and exposure in the scandal completely under control. Mueller is showing no signs of wanting to pursue Pence any time in the future about his involvement in the matter and the last thing McConnell wants now is for any new interests in Pence’s involvement to come out of any congressional appearances. In making this move McConnell has successfully made a “PR” end-run around Mueller.

While the country has been deeply engrossed in the Mueller/Trump interview possibilities, McConnell deliberately chose to throw Pence into the interviewing mix, knowing full well Mueller was not interested in interviewing Pence. McConnell’s objective was clear. Create the public perception that as far as Mueller is concerned Pence was simply a wide-eyed innocent duped by Trump’s inner circle who Mueller has no interest in pursuing any further in the Russia scandal. This was McConnell making Pence look cooperative in the court of public opinion. This was McConnell making Pence look viable to inherit the presidency by default once McConnell replaced Trump with Pence. This is McConnell publicly demonstrating that Mueller has shown no interest in indicting Pence at this time, which suggests Mueller does not need or want to indict Pence in order to bring Trump down.
Mueller may never request an interview with Pence.

Pence found himself at the center of the controversy over Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, which became part of the Mueller investigation. At the time Flynn assured Pence that he did not discuss U.S. sanctions with Russia’s ambassador, a statement Pence then repeated publicly. Pence learned that Flynn had lied to him from news reports once it became public that Flynn had discussed sanctions with the ambassador, Flynn was fired. Flynn subsequently admitted to misleading Pence and lying to the FBI. At the time Pence told CBS News “What I can tell you is I knew that he lied to me.” It remains unclear when Pence learned Flynn had lied to him. Trump entered office on January 20 and Flynn tendered his resignation on February 13. McConnell knows that Pence’s knowledge, if any, of Flynn’s firing, or for that matter, of Comey’s firing, could be a possible avenue Mueller could explore. These dismissals have reportedly been a focus of the special counsel’s probe, and CNN reported earlier this month that Mueller could interview Pence as a result. Both dismissals however would require Mueller to prove what Pence knew and when, all of which could still be explained away by McConnell as plausible denial in a court of public opinion. So, for the time being anyway, McConnell’s strategy for Pence, when it comes to Russia’s election meddling, is to continue to argue Pence was left in the dark, as he has argued for nearly a year now.
