As so-called President Trump attempts to take the focus off his likely-treasonous, likely anti-democratic collusion with Russia by railing against the free press – the only profession so vital to democracy the founders protected it in the Constitution, there is no doubt that the right wing reality-tv star will also employ another one of the never-fail tactics of dictators – namely, he will drag us into more, endless war.
While 99.9% of Republicans continue to cower and refuse to stand up to the disastrous wannabe dictator in the hopes that he’ll sign their legislation privatizing Social Security, destroying Medicare, stripping millions of health care and destroying pesky democracy once and for all, Republican Senator John McCain, at least… and at times… tells truths right wing sycophants need to hear.
This time, speaking in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation show “7:30,” McCain said that Trump’s idol Vladimir Putin is the “premier and most important threat, more so than ISIS.”
McCain said, “while ISIS can do terrible things it’s the Russians who tried to destroy the fundamental of democracy and that is to change the outcome of an American election.” Calling for the U.S. to impose sanctions on Russia, McCain added that the U.S. has “done nothing since the election last November to respond to Vladimir Putin’s attempt to change the outcome of our elections. So, way to go Vladimir. We haven’t responded at all.”
McCain Agrees, Trump Presidency Makes Him “Nervous”
As Lucy Wescott reported for Newsweek, “McCain’s comments come amid multiple investigations into potential connections between the White House and Russia. On Friday, another bombshell news story dropped, stating that Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, tried to set up a secret line of communication with the Russians ahead of Trump’s presidency. Addressing the reports, McCain said he doesn’t think “it’s standard procedure prior to the inauguration of the president of the United States by someone who is not in an appointed position” to try and establish such communications.
McCain added: ‘This is becoming more and more bizarre. In fact, you can’t make it up.’
The senator was also asked if the Trump presidency makes him feel nervous, to which he responded: ‘I am nervous from time to time.’
‘I do believe the president has great confidence in this national security team. I do believe most of the time that he accepts their advice and counsel,’ he said. ‘Can I tell you that he does all the time? No. Does it bother me? Yes, it bothers me.’
“Maverick” McCain Also Gave Us Sarah Palin
So far, McCain remains a lone voice of reason in a party that daily illustrates what I’ve said for years – Republicans don’t like democracy and can’t stand when it interferes with their selfish, greed-centered, plots.
While we should commend McCain for being (at times) the lone voice of reason in a party cowed by the international embarrassment, Trump, let’s not forget that he’s the one who catapulted Sarah Palin onto the national stage. No normal, thinking person can believe that McCain believed Palin was the most qualified person to be a 76-year old heartbeat away from the nuclear codes. He went along with this sham, even after it was clear that Palin was way over her head, because the Republican establishment believed Palin covered some demographic sweet spot that would aid in their quest for the power to rig government further against the dupes stupid enough to buy their act.
From an ignoramus like Palin to a megalo-ignoramus like Trump is not that big of a leap. Now Republicans have their authoritarian daddy to save them from the scary, complex, world of “others” who don’t know their “place.” Unfortunately, it’s not just the dupes who will suffer the consequences of the fascist Republican takeover of government, but the entire world.
Trump isn’t some aberrant outlier on the fringe of Republicanism, he is everything they are – fascist, anti-democratic and dangerous to everything that made this country great in the first place.
While I’m glad McCain the “Maverick” makes regular appearances in the battle to reclaim government from the likes of Trump, let’s not easily forget how we ended up here.
