On Saturday morning, disgraced financier and admitted pervert Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his cell at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center. At the time of his death, Epstein was facing charges of trafficking minors in Florida and New York. Additionally, based on the discovery of numerous lewd images of underage girls in his Manhattan townhouse, it was a near-certainty that he’d be slapped with additional charges of possessing child pornography. Based on what is publicly known, the reality of the legal doo-doo Epstein was facing must have hit home.
By this writer’s rough estimate, Epstein was facing a minimum of 19 years in prison on the present indictment. Factor in the prospect of child porn charges, and he was probably facing 34 years in prison. At his age, either sentence would have all but assured he would die in prison.
Given the gravity of the charges and public anger over his previous sweetheart plea deal with former U. S. Attorney and Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, it’s hard to believe federal prosecutors in New York could have credibly offered a plea deal calling for anything less than 20 years–effectively a life sentence. When you know that the only way you’re getting out of prison is in a pine box, even the toughest men can crack under pressure.
Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is well acquainted with this reality. He recalled prosecuting a number of perverts who wound up committing suicide while he was U. S. Attorney in Maryland.
Rosenstein cited an article from the Federal Probation Journal about the high risk of suicide among those accused of sex crimes. It noted that defendants often have feelings of “shame, isolation, fear of the unknown, and the prospect of a probable prison sentence.” That comes as no surprise, given that many sex crimes carry some of the stiffest sentences available.
But, as we all know, such little things as facts have never gotten in the way of a good conspiracy theory. Within hours of Epstein’s death, the tubes lit up with claims that Epstein had been somehow rubbed out–depending on the source, either by the Clintons or by Donald Trump. Epstein had close ties to both, and it was thought that he could potentially bring them down and/or bring down a number of people in both their circles.
Among those who have been raising the alternate reality that Epstein was the Clintons’ latest victim is former Trump White House official, right-wing provocateur and talk show host Sebastian Gorka. What extraordinary evidence did Gorka offer to support this extraordinary claim? Drum roll please–Attorney General William Barr’s statement that Epstein had been “found dead,” with no reference to suicide. No, this isn’t snark.
Has it occurred to Gorka that at the time this announcement was made, it wasn’t clear at the time whether Epstein’s death was a suicide? It was only after reporters worked their sources–you know, what good journalists are supposed to do–that we saw the first reports that it was likely a suicide.
But such little details have never mattered to Gorka. So when Gorka saw Rosenstein’s take on Epstein’s death, he thought Rosenstein was the one not willing to see reality.
Again, Sebastian–what extraordinary evidence do you have to support this extraordinary claim? You have yet to offer any.
That being said, though, the odor from Epstein’s death is so rank that I can smell it all the way here in Charlotte–and it doesn’t take putting on a tinfoil hat to draw that conclusion. For one, he was placed on suicide watch after being found with bruises on his neck in late July. When he was taken off suicide watch a week later, he was supposed to have a roommate–but that roommate was transferred out, leaving him alone. Additionally, guards failed to check on him every half hour, as required.
These lapses have a lot of former federal prison officials collectively asking, in so many words, “What the hell happened over there?” Indeed, some of them wonder why Epstein was taken off suicide watch in the first place. Simply put, a lot of people have some explaining to do.
We should rightly be asking questions about how Epstein died. But as it stands now, this appears to be a complete breakdown of every safeguard intended to prevent prisoners from committing suicide. Judging by Gorka’s furious tweeting, though, no amount of evidence may be enough to make him accept any reality that contradicts the notion that this was a Clinton black op.
