Laura Ingraham shares a disturbing tendency with her male counterparts on Fox News–opening her mouth and jamming her foot in deep. For instance, last spring she mocked Parkland survivor David Hogg for being rejected by UCLA, only to be all but forced to apologize after several of her advertisers bailed.
If possible, Ingraham may have sunk even lower than that on Thursday night. In case you missed it, she and Candace Owens claimed that criticisms from Democrats about doctored videos floating around the tubes are part of a liberal plot to “silence conservative voices.” She then shared a graphic of several “prominent conservative voices” who have been either censored or outright gagged on social media.
That list included some of the most noxious trolls and conspiracy theory peddlers on the Internet, like Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos. But perhaps the most disturbing member of the list was Paul Nehlen, best known for his two unsuccessful tilts at the Republican nomination for the Wisconsin congressional district long held by Paul Ryan. During that second run, in 2018, Nehlen revealed himself to be a stone-cold racist and anti-Semite.
He appeared on several white nationalist podcasts on which he unashamedly blew white nationalist dog whistles. He accused his critics of being “anti-white,” and on at least one occasion attacked one of his Jewish critics with an “echo,” a meme white nationalists use to flag Jews or supposed “Jewish influence.” Eventually, he was kicked off Twitter for sharing a racist meme attacking Prince Harry’s then-fiancee, Meghan Markle.
Nehlen has since become so extreme that he has been ostracized by his own white nationalist brethren. After he doxed prominent white nationalist troll “Ricky Vaughn” as part of an ongoing dispute over tactics, he was banned from Gab, the social media platform whose laissez-faire approach to trolling has led it to become a favorite for the far right. Several other prominent white nationalists publicly cut ties with him. Steve Bannon and Breitbart, who had initially backed his second challenge to Ryan, threw him overboard in December. Too extreme for fellow white nationalists and Breitbart? Now that takes some effort.
He has since devoted most of his time to openly praising mass shooters, per Michael Edison Hayden of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
News flash, Laura. If you see a slimeball like Nehlen as a “prominent conservative” who is being ganged up on by those evil libruls, your moral compass is even more warped than we thought. Apparently the powers that be at Fox News are just as warped. In a statement, Fox News claimed it was “obscene” to accuse Ingraham of defending Nehlen and his “despicable actions.” Never mind that’s exactly what Ingraham did by featuring Nehlen in that segment.
Laura delivered her response on Friday–not by something she said, but by something she did. She allowed one of her guests to blow a blatant anti-Semitic dog whistle. Namely, Rudy Giuliani. Watch here.
Among other things, Giuliani and Ingraham discussed Giuliani’s aborted trip to Ukraine. Giuliani intended to fly there in hopes of delving into the origins of the investigation into Russian hacking, as well as a criminal inquiry into Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden. However, in the face of a firestorm of protest, Giuliani shelved the trip, saying that he was being “set up” by his foes in Ukraine.
But while speaking with Ingraham, Giuliani suggested it was more sinister than that.
I didn’t go over there because they surrounded the present president of the Ukraine with Soros people, Democrats, and people that were trying to set us up. I was going over there to make sure they investigate the Ukrainian collusion conspiracy with Hillary Clinton’s people.
This went well beyond a typical Republican effort to claim that the Democrats’ strings are being pulled by megadonor George Soros. Ukraine’s newly sworn-in president, comedian Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish. So a high-profile conservative from New York claims a wealthy Jewish businessman is pulling the strings of a Jewish president. If anyone believes that Giuliani didn’t know exactly what he was doing here, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn up for sale.
Almost as telling was Ingraham’s reaction. Or rather, lack thereof. As if nothing happened, Laura actually asked Rudy if he still hoped to go to Ukraine. Giuliani said he intended to do so “when I am sure they won’t misstate why I am going over there.”
So Ingraham had a chance to make up for her shameful display of merely 24 hours prior–and blew it eight ways to Sunday. Any host with an iota of decency would have shut Giuliani down right then and right there.
For some time, Elizabeth Warren has been drawing hackles for her refusal to appear on Fox News, calling it a “hate-for-profit racket.” Suddenly, Warren’s decision doesn’t look so outlandish. If Fox News’ highest-profile female host finds it even remotely acceptable to condone anti-Semitic bile, it says a lot about both her and the network.
You ought to be ashamed of yourself, Laura. If you have anything at all in you, you should apologize–and publicly.
