In recent days, we have learned that Donald Trump and his team in the White House had numerous opportunities to get out in front of the coronavirus crisis–and blew them eight ways to Sunday. And yet, if you listen to the most diehard of the diehard Trump supporters, no one else but Trump could possibly lead this country out of the abyss. A glimpse of this alternative reality came from what has become an expected source–the First Daughter-in-Law, Lara.
Although she only joined the family by virtue of marrying Trump’s second son, Eric, Lara has proven time and again that she fits right in with this family. For instance, Lara played a central role in one of the worst moments of her father-in-law’s presidency. Days after a crowd at a Trump rally in Greenville, North Carolina demanded that their dear leader send Congresswoman Ilhan Omar back to Somalia, Lara tried to claim that her father-in-law was actually trying to calm the crowd down. Hogwash, said CNN’s Anderson Cooper. Watch here.
Cooper noted that Lara had the audacity to go on Fox Business and claim that only a few people were chanting “Send her back! Send her back!” In truth, the chant filled the arena. Cooper also noted that the First Daughter-in-Law herself primed the crowd for this shameful moment. While warming up the crowd for her father-in-law’s arrival, Lara took a swipe at Omar by saying, “If you don’t like our country, the president said it–you can leave! Right?”
Lara also raised hackles by tweeting out this meme in the wake of the Democrats ramping up their efforts to impeach her father-in-law.
Um, Lara? Acres don’t vote, people do.
Well, on Friday, Lara served up yet another heavy dose of alternative facting in her role as a senior adviser to her father-in-law’s campaign
Lara went on to gush over her father-in-law’s “bold and historic steps” to fight this pandemic, such as imposing travel and border restrictions; propping up “states, small businesses, jobs and American families” who have been affected; and rapid deployment of personal protective equipment to our hospitals. At the same time, she accused the Democrats of “playing politics with people’s lives.” She claimed that her father-in-law was “the one leader who will ensure that our economy will come roaring back.”
Um, Lara? Does your father-in-law’s definition of “bold and historic steps” include disbanding a unit of the National Security Council that was specifically tasked with preparing for a pandemic of this magnitude? Or ignoring multiple intelligence reports warning that coronavirus was about to explode globally? Or lining out a China-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specialist who was specifically tasked with watching for signs of a pandemic? Or dismissing coronavirus as no worse than the flu, despite ample evidence that it is far more severe and far deadlier?
And if we follow your father’s advice and reopen the economy by Easter weekend, the numbers don’t lie–the economy definitely won’t roar back. Indeed, it could actually make things worse in the long run.
If you want to look at who is taking “bold and historic steps” to fight coronavirus, Lara, look at the governors, county officials, and mayors. They have stepped into the yawning canyon of leadership left by your father-in-law and taken definitive measures to protect the public and their health care systems. They know that we can’t go back to normal too soon. That’s why almost half of the country is now under “stay at home” or “shelter in place” orders that limit nonessential travel in order to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed.
Eric Trump has often been derided as the dullard of the Trump family. However, if Lara seriously believes that her father-in-law is actually providing the leadership we need in this crisis, she may be giving her husband some competition as the most dense member of the family.
