On April 3, special counsel Robert Mueller detonated what may have been his loudest bombshell yet. He revealed that he is looking into Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s lobbying work as an extension of a broader investigation into whether Manafort colluded with Russian forces. Less than 24 hours later, in what can charitably be described as a piece of exceptional timing, a cabal of some of Trump’s most diehard supporters on the religious right decided their messiah needed protection from those seeking to bring him down.
The folks at People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch discovered that just hours after Mueller’s announcement, Jim Bakker–yes, that Jim Bakker–brought on several pastors who are leading members of “POTUS Shield,” an ad hoc gaggle of pastors who joined forces soon after Trump’s election to “storm heaven” on his behalf and “raise up a shield of prayer and prophetic understanding” for him. Most of them come from the New Apostolic Reformation, an overtly fascist offshoot of the religious right that believes it can bring about the Second Coming by taking over the world.
POTUS Shield’s founder, Frank Amedia, brought several members of POTUS Shield’s council with him to warn Bakker’s audience that Trump is literally under attack from the devil. Watch here.
Amedia warned that “evil forces” and “deep state forces” are driving “a conspiracy that’s already been named.” Among the ringleaders of this “conspiracy” are two former FBI directors–Mueller and James Comey. He claimed that he and his colleagues intend to be the “watchmen” telling the nation to keep their eyes open for the oncoming storm.
Recalling that Trump supposedly told reporters wondering about the storms swirling around him, “I am the storm,” Amedia prayed that God would stir Trump up “like a tornado” and ensure that everything is exposed. He then told Bakker that “the spirit of Antichrist” and other forces are working overtime to “snuff out” both Trump’s work and the efforts of the “rising church.” However, he warned that those forces are in for a surprise.
“But God’s going to use that to bring it right back into its own snare, just like he did Hillary on election night. It’s going to hang on its own gallows.”
Amedia was speaking in code–one that Bakker’s audience readily understood. Haman, for those who don’t recall, was an adviser to the Persian king who was planning a massive slaughter of Jews. But when Queen Esther, herself a Jew, blew the whistle on it, the king ordered Haman hung on the gallows originally intended for the Jewish leaders.
On that note, Amedia told Hispanic Action Network president and POTUS Shield council member Mark Gonzales to start a warfare prayer for Trump. Gonzales obliged, praying for winds to blow and “clean the house” of our government. Amedia joined in, supernaturally taking apart “every conspiracy, every weapon” formed against Trump.
Gonzales picked it back up, declaring that a “boomerang” would hit those trying to bring down Trump. Council member Harry Jackson–best known as the leader of the effort to oppose marriage equality in Washington–prayed against “witches and warlocks” who were supposedly cursing Trump.
Bear in mind, folks. This aired a mere 24 hours after Mueller effectively told the nation that he has reason to believe the operating head of a major-party presidential campaign colluded with a hostile foreign government to harm another campaign. And yet, these so-called pastors see the effort to expose potentially treasonous conduct as a demonic act? As a charismatic Christian Dem, I must ask–are these guys worshiping Jesus, or Trump?
