Yesterday the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted an easement to the much disputed Dakota Pipeline. Trump signed the Executive Order to get Keystone XL & the Dakota Access Pipelines passed through despite the claiming he never heard of any protests. The irony is astounding. In the statement granting the easement, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers purports concern about the state of the land – pre-protest – but doesn’t seem to care about the environmental impact of the pipeline itself. The possibility of contaminating a main source of drinking water for the community with the added “bonus” of desecrating sacred burial sites doesn’t seem to matter to the Corps.
In a statement to the media, (so-called) President Trump once again played the role of Liar in Chief, disingenuously asserting that worldwide protests against the pipeline never happened.
As you know I approved two pipelines that were stuck in limbo forever. I don’t even think it was controversial. You know, I approved them and I haven’t even heard one call from anybody saying, ‘oh, that was a terrible thing you did… Years of getting approvals, nobody showed up to fight it. This company spends a tremendous — hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars, and then all of a sudden, people show up to fight it. It’s not fair to our companies.
The lies just roll off the lips of our fascist authoritarian so-called President. Apparently, as a (so-called) “businessperson,” the Grifter in Chief wants us to know that self-serving greed is the only American value worthy of consideration.
Just so we’re clear, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers canceled the Environmental Impact Statement, giving Energy Transfer Partners the green-light to begin work on the disputed pipeline immediately. One thing’s for sure, the fascist Trump does keep his promises to his buddies, as he eagerly turns the government of the United States into an appendage of the affairs of billionaires.
Clearly, the fascists don’t give a damn about Sovereign rights or treaties. Dave Archambault II, chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, said in a statement,
The environmental impact statement was wrongfully terminated. This pipeline was unfairly rerouted across our treaty lands. The Trump administration — yet again — is poised to set a precedent that defies the law and the will of Americans and our allies around the world.
It’s a sad month for the environment and the truth. For the sake of the future of the planet, we must continue to resist.
