It’s been no secret that the religious right has been willing to turn a blind eye to Donald Trump’s outrages because he’s giving them what they want and then some on social issues. But it’s one thing to know something’s happening. It’s quite another to prove it. That proof came last weekend from a rabidly pro-Trump prophetess who declared those who oppose Trump because of his boorish behavior are asking him to uphold standards that aren’t in the Bible.
Wanda Alger is co-pastor of Crossroads Community Church in Winchester, Virginia and a field reporter with Intercessors for America. She penned a column for Charisma magazine in which she wagged her finger at those who take issue with Trump’s behavior. She claimed–with a straight face–that we shouldn’t concern ourselves with Trump’s behavior because there are “no indications of personal morality or godliness being required” by Scripture.
Considering that just a few days later, Michele Bachmann insisted that Trump was our most godly president ever, this line from Alger is a little jarring, to say the least. Apparently the fundies can’t keep their false narratives and alternative facts about Trump straight.
But just in case Alger didn’t make herself clear, she googled down on Monday. Or, to be more precise, God googled down through her. She took to her blog to post a “word from the Lord” warning those who oppose Trump’s outrages that the Almighty is not pleased with such talk.
Supposedly, God told Alger that those offended by Trump’s “speech and demeanor” forget that “it is MY zeal that I have placed in this one” and “MY righteous anger at the demonic forces swirling within this nation.” If you believe Alger, God wants us to know that while Trump seems to be riled up at his “natural enemies,” in truth he is speaking to the “spiritual enemies” of this nation.
God supposedly told Alger that he has made Trump “a man of war” who will not shy away from fighting against “those who oppose Me in the high places of darkness and deception.” Supposedly, Trump isn’t aware of how God is using him, but God is using Trump’s “weaknesses and missteps” to further the kingdom of God.
As many of you know, I am a charismatic Christian. I’ve seen these so-called “words from the Lord” before. This is nothing more than a ham-handed attempt to silence those who oppose Trump and make them think the lightning bolt is on the way if they don’t shut up. That includes a good number of people on both sides of the political divide. Frankly, it’s one of the more laughable attempts I’ve seen over the last few years to bully Trump critics into silence.
Riddle me this, Wanda. So when Trump retweeted a meme showing him knocking Hillary Clinton down with a tee shot and another meme depicting CNN as a bloody splatter on his wingtip, he was merely showing the zeal God had placed in him? So when Trump called Stormy Daniels “horseface” and Omarosa a “dog,” he was merely speaking to “spiritual enemies”? So when Trump rails against “fake news” and fires off hateful, racially charged tweets at lawmakers of color who dare to oppose him, he’s fighting against those “in the high places of darkness and deception”?
I could go on, but these are some of the more ridiculous things you’d have to believe in order to “receive” this “word from the Lord.” Let there no longer be any doubt–when Alger and other Trump-worshiping ministers talk about the need to restore traditional values, they might as well sound like this.
Here’s a news flash, Wanda. You and your compatriots have spent the last four-plus years warning us against opposing Trump’s outrages, and peddling feeble attempts at explaining why we should just sit down and shut up. Nevertheless, we will persist. And many of us persist because we do not oppose Trump in spite of our faith, but because of our faith.
