In recent years, whenever a major natural disaster occurs, crackpot preachers wail that it’s a sign God is not pleased with us. On the face of it, Hurricane Dorian is made to order for this sort of hellfire and brimstone. The storm lashed the Bahamas with winds of 185 mph–putting it in a four-way tie for the second-most intense North Atlantic storm on record.
Its present track has it churning up the Atlantic coast, dumping gallons of rain from Fort Lauderdale to Virginia Beach on Wednesday and Thursday. Before heading out to sea, it’s slated to bring high winds and heavy surf to that den of iniquity, Cape Cod and the Islands.
But two of the religious right’s favorite conspiracy merchants have a rather surprising take on this monster hurricane. To hear them talk, it’s a classic op cooked up by those swamp creatures in the deep state to keep us from learning that their ranks are about to be decimated by mass arrests.
On Monday night, podcaster and conspiracy theorist Chris McDonald sat down for a chat for one of his best friends, false prophet and fellow conspiracy peddler Mark Taylor. The discussion soon turned to Dorian. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
McDonald claimed it was no accident that Dorian turned into a monster right around the time the Justice Department’s inspector general found that former FBI Director James Comey breached FBI policy by leaking classified memos about his interactions with Donald Trump. The DOJ decided against prosecuting Comey, but the White House has let it be known that Comey isn’t out of the legal woods yet.
McDonald told Taylor that the timing of this hurricane was almost too uncanny. Right around the time Rudy Giuliani supposedly hinted that a raft of arrests were coming, he said, “boom, you’ve got an almost Category 6 storm.” He argued that it was clear the hurricane was an attempt to deflect our attention–and therefore, “a red flag or false flag or whatever we call it.”
Predictably, Taylor lapped it up. A week earlier, he had warned that “the hordes of chaos have been released,” and this hurricane is yet more proof. To those wringing their hands about Comey not being prosecuted, Taylor claimed that “the bigger stuff is coming”–and a lot of people are going to jail. To hear Taylor talk, the swamp creatures know it–after all, they set loose these demonic hordes “because they know their time is short.”
Well, that’s interesting. So those evil swamp creatures were so determined to cloud our vision that they essentially parked a monster hurricane over the Bahamas for an entire weekend? Remember, folks, Dorian was more or less stationary over the Bahamas for much of Sunday and Monday, which made an already dangerous situation even worse. And yet, if you believe McDonald and Taylor, this was all part of the deep state’s plan.
To be sure, McDonald and Taylor’s line is a model of sanity compared to some of the more bizarre conspiracy theories we’ve heard about hurricanes of late. Some have claimed that the most devastating hurricanes and tornadoes in recent years have been man-made.
That doesn’t make this claptrap from McDonald and Taylor any less unnerving. After all, they have substantial followings among the most diehard of Trump diehards. That means a substantial part of the element that still believes Trump walks on water believes Dorian is more proof that the swamp needs to be drained, post-haste. They don’t know that McDonald and Taylor are actually proof that the swamp is overflowing.
