For much of the weekend, the political world was abuzz at Donald Trump once again seeing fit to smear Elizabeth Warren’s Native American ancestry. In case you missed it, Trump not only called Warren “Pocahontas” for the umpteenth time, but made a not-so-subtle reference to the Trail of Tears. But believe it or not, a prominent right-winger saw fit to uncork an even lower blow than that. He suggested that the reason Cory Booker is single is because he’s a closeted gay man.
Booker is hoping to become only the third bachelor ever to win the White House. The first two were James Buchanan, who served from 1857 to 1861 without ever marrying, and Grover Cleveland, who married Frances Folsom two years into his first of two separate terms as president.
However, Politico’s Joanna Weiss noted that Buchanan and Cleveland served in an era when the public viewed single politicians as putting their country above all other matters. By the turn of the century, being married had become almost an unwritten requirement for anyone aspiring to the national stage. It led Weiss to wonder if the country is ready for another bachelor president.
When American Family Radio afternoon drive time host Bryan Fischer saw this, he thought we were asking the wrong question.
I had to read this twice to believe it. Unless I read it wrong, Fischer was suggesting that Booker is hiding the fact that he’s really gay. And apparently he expects us to take his word for it.
As ridiculous as this tweet is, it’s especially so considering that Fischer and the religious right are still loyal to a man who has cheated on all three of his wives and revels in degrading women. How, pray tell, is that not the definition of “sexual deviancy,” Bryan? Willis’ colleague at Politico, David Freedlander, certainly wanted to know.
Later, when Freelander asked Fischer if Trump’s “sexual deviancy” disqualified him, Fischer seemed to engage in a very public act of flip-flopping.
Hmmm, so if Booker is gay and he does defeat Trump in 2020, it will be perfectly fine because he would have been “duly elected”?
Political consultant Evan O’Donnell spoke for nearly every American with an iota of decency when Fischer’s original bilge rolled across his phone.
Apparently Fischer either didn’t understand or–more likely–refuses to understand how shallow and bigoted his attack on Booker was, judging by his response.
No, Bryan. When you even suggest that we have the right to question whether a single male politician is gay if he’s running for president, you’re a homophobe. That’s not “old and shopworn.” That’s calling a spade a spade.
The other all-too-obvious question–if Booker is gay, what does that have to do with his ability to do the job? Radio personality Carol Roth certainly wanted to know.
Fischer responded with typical religious right jargon.
Now here’s a shopworn response. And it’s even more so considering Fischer and his religious right buddies are asking us to ignore the almost daily outrages from Trump’s White House because he’s not just making America great again, but making America Christian again.
News flash, Bryan–if you take that line, you have nada, zip, zero right to lecture us on whether Booker, or any other Democrat, is qualified. And if you’re under the delusion that you have the right to do so after getting your audience to bow down to Trump, there is only one response for you.
What’s missing from this? Any iota of evidence that Booker is single in order to hide his supposed gayness, beyond Fischer’s word. Not even on Monday’s edition of “Focal Point.” Apparently Fischer forgets that if you’re going to play hardball, you have to step up to the plate.
