In the face of the almost daily outrages coming from Donald Trump’s White House, one constant remains–his support among the religious right. Without fail, the so-called moral guardians rally to Trump at every turn. Also without fail, it seems that just when you think Trump does something too outrageous, too degrading, or too offensive even for the fundies, they still bow down to him.
Sadly, we may be witnessing a brand new low. All indications are that even the sight of Trump publicly bowing down to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin isn’t a bridge too far for the religious right.
You may recall that just hours after Trump uncritically accepted Putin’s claim that Russia didn’t hack the election, and consequently throwing the American intelligence community under the bus, Franklin Graham stood up and applauded. He claimed that by taking this stance, Trump had–wait for it–put “peace before politics.”
Sadly, it doesn’t look like Graham was an outlier. In the face of bipartisan disgust at Trump’s behavior, many of Trump’s loudest religious right supporters saw fit to rally to the man many of them consider a champion for not only making America great again, but making America Christian again.
Take Lance Wallnau, for instance. Wallnau is rabidly pro-Trump that he thinks those who oppose Trump risk letting the devil into their homes, and that God’s reputation could be damaged if Trump goes down. He also claimed that Robert Mueller’s investigation placed a cloud over Trump. He also openly admitted that he knew Putin was a thug–but preferred him to putting Democrats in charge here.
Did seeing Trump take Putin’s word over that of his own intelligence community faze Wallnau? Nope.
In case you haven’t been paying attention, Lance, many liberals recoiled in horror when Trump offered maudlin praise to North Korean strongman Kim Jong-un and put pictures of Kim in the White House. We’ve also raised alarm over Xi Jinping’s naked power grab in China. But then again, such things as facts never got in the way of a campaign of alternative facts.
Rick Joyner of MorningStar Ministries and the Oak Initiative was of a similar mind. In a message to his Facebook followers, Joyner harrumphed that the anger over Trump’s actions in Helsinki was “much to about nothing.” He accepted Trump’s claim that he actually meant to endorse the intelligence community’s assessment that Russia hacked the election. Joyner believed that Trump said “would” when he supposedly meant to say “wouldn’t” because of severe jet lag.
What Joyner didn’t want his followers to know is that Trump told reporters that he believed “other people” were to blame as well–flying in the face of the intelligence community putting the blame squarely on the Kremlin. Plus, just hours before Trump tried and failed to correct the record, he saw fit to thank Senator Rand Paul for defending him.
Trump was referring to an interview Paul gave on “CBS This Morning,” in which he uncritically praised Trump for talking to Putin. Watch here.
Care to explain how that was jet lag, Rick?
Another prominent Rick on the religious right believed it was time to rally to Trump–Rick Wiles of TruNews. On Tuesday’s edition of “TruNewsTV,” Wiles wrung his hands at the “boiling hot anti-Trump mania” from “deep state” supporters on both sides of the aisle. He mused that the “deep state” was planning to remove Trump–possibly within 72 hours. Uh huh. So when our leaders put country above party, and remember that they’re Americans before they’re Democrats or Republicans, they’re planning a coup? Got it.
We already know why the religious right is so steadfastly loyal to Trump. He promised to give them virtually everything they’ve wanted–ending abortion, rolling back marriage equality, the lot. But at what price? Are they willing to condone a president who engages in reckless and potentially treasonous conduct? No cause is that important. Ever.
It’s been obvious for some time that the religious right has made social issues a golden calf. But if they still feel that they need to rally to Trump, no matter how outrageous and potentially treasonous he may act, then there will no longer be any doubt–they have made him an orange calf.
