The religious right would like you to believe that all it wants is to make sure Americans with “traditional values” have a place at the table. But occasionally, when they think no one is paying attention, they reveal their true agenda–to turn this country into a Christian version of ISIS, Iran, or Afghanistan under the Taliban. And when they engage in this sort of talk, they sometimes reveal that while they say they have Jesus in their hearts, they actually have ice in their hearts.
We got a lovely example of this on Tuesday. One of the more obnoxious so-called moral guardians skipped and danced at the thought that a new Ice Age could potentially cause a lot of iniquity to literally freeze to death.
Among the many religious right leaders and pastors who have bowed down to Donald Trump, Rick Wiles is almost in the same class as the likes of Steve Strang, Lance Wallnau, Jim Bakker and Rick Joyner. The impresario of “TruNews” was one of the earliest fundies to get on the Trump train, and has joined in on his compatriots’ effort to bully evangelicals and the nation at large into supporting Trump.
This is a man who believes that opposing Trump amounts to sedition, and that accepting Jesus into your heart is a surefire cure for “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He also thinks that CNN’s critical coverage of Trump isn’t a sign that it’s doing its job. Nope, it’s a sign that–horrors!–it’s under the influence of witchcraft and demons.
But if possible, Wiles may have hit a new low on Tuesday’s edition of “TruNewsTV.” He told his viewers to get ready for the onset of another Ice Age–one that will result in a lot of evildoers dying in the cold.
Wiles was following up on a bombshell he detonated on Monday’s show–we may literally be months from a 350-year Ice Age. Watch here.
Wiles claimed that the first sign of this new Ice Age will come this winter, and the following winter will see a dramatic change from global warming to global cooling.
On Tuesday’s show, Wiles went further. He mused that there would be a major upside to this significant temperature drop–we may see a lot less sin in the world, because a lot of evil people will literally freeze to death. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
Wiles had a warning for those laughing and pointing at him–you better change your tune and get ready, or “you’re going to end up freezing to death.” Later in the show, while discussing the ramifications with sidekick Doc Burkhart, Wiles recalled that a number of people on Facebook and Twitter asked, “Why would God do this to us? Why would he allow it to happen?”
Burkhart mused that this Ice Age was man-made, since “all these things are happening as a result of man’s sin.” He claimed that Earth was never designed to deal with the kind of sin that happens on a daily basis, since God made it “perfect.” Therefore, all of the disruption caused by sin is throwing the planet out of whack. However, Burkhart noted, even though God didn’t cause it, he can still use it.
Wiles ate it up, saying that this coming Ice Age “will freeze out Planned Parenthood,” and also cause viewership of porn and drug use to take a nosedive. As Wiles saw it, God is going to use this Ice Age to “freeze out a lot of sin.”
This is as cold, callous and heartless a statement as I’ve ever seen from a fundie over the years. What Wiles was essentially saying is that the thousands of people who will freeze to death is a small price to pay if much of the world’s sin dies off as well.
What makes this even more chilling is that Wiles is also a pastor. He pastors Flowing Streams Church, a nondenominational charismatic church in Vero Beach, Florida. Indeed, TruNews brands itself as an outreach of the church. Speaking as a charismatic Christian myself, I would sooner have my wisdom teeth pulled without anesthesia rather than sit under a pastor who delivered such a callous message.
Like a lot of anti-Trump Christians on both sides of the aisle, I’ve wondered how Wiles and others can still believe Trump is some sort of champion for their cause even though he has no soul, heart, or conscience. Well, here’s part of my answer. Apparently they have no soul, heart or conscience either.
