On Sunday morning, Donald Trump gave us yet more evidence that he is the most manifestly unfit and unqualified president in recent memory. He got the bright idea to take a cheap shot at one of his most persistent tormentors over the last two years, Congressman Adam Schiff of California. Schiff is the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, and is poised to become the committee’s chairman when the new Democratic majority takes office in January.
Over the last week, Schiff has emerged as one of the staunchest critics of Trump’s decision to push out Attorney General Jeff Sessions and appoint Sessions’ former chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, to hold the post until a permanent replacement is confirmed. In an op-ed that ran in November 12’s edition of The Washington Post, Schiff warned Whitaker that “he will be called to answer” if he tries to obstruct Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election hacking.
Since then, Schiff has dropped by a number of talk shows to drive that message further home. For instance, on November 12’s edition of MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” Schiff told host Lawrence O’Donnell that he intended that article as a preemptive strike against any shenanigans Whitaker may pull. Watch here.
Apparently this drumbeat must have gotten to Trump. That’s the only way you can explain the 280-character rant he fired off on Sunday morning.
Notice that he didn’t call Schiff “little Adam Schiff,” which would have been insulting enough. He called him “little Adam Schitt.” We already knew that Trump’s demands for decorum in the White House were hot air. This latest cheap shot from the Troll-in-Chief only proves it.
Well, on Monday, we learned beyond any doubt that Trump really did cross a line. Not even Breitbart News can find a way to defend him.
Breitbart is so rabidly loyal to Trump that many of its critics on both sides of the aisle have taken to calling it “Trumpbart.” That’s been true even after Steve Bannon was pushed out of Breitbart for good earlier this year. So when Breitbart’s Joel Pollak wrote about how Politico called out this latest Trump cheap shot, it appeared that he was going to somehow find a way to justify it.
Politico’s Quint Forgey noted how Trump’s swipe at Schiff looked rather awkward considering that First Lady Melania Trump has supposedly made it her priority to combat cyberbullying. Pollak’s headline appeared to suggest that he and Breitbart thought this was a lot of fuss over nothing: “Politico Accuses Trump Of ‘Cyberbullying’ ‘Little Adam Schitt’.
But Pollak went on to shoot down Trump’s only remotely plausible defense.
The ‘f’ key is near the ‘t’ key on a typical QWERTY keyboard, but the president’s errant spelling of Schiff’s surname was almost certainly deliberate.
Wow. So even a Breitbart editor has to concede that this was a cheap shot.
Considering how low Breitbart’s standards are, this is very telling. Remember, Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow openly admitted last year that he believed at least one of Roy Moore’s accusers was credible–and yet still went all-in for Moore because he thought The Post’s explosive article about Moore’s debauched behavior was a hatchet job.
In so doing, Marlow effectively put giant asterisks by every instance Breitbart effectively called Moore’s accusers liars, both online and on “Breitbart News Daily.” He also tacitly admitted to engaging in behavior that, at the very least, met the real-world definition of reckless disregard for the truth. With that episode, Breitbart proved what most of us have known for some time–in its quest to burn everything down, it incinerated its moral compass. And that assumes that it ever a moral compass in the first place.
So when a right-wing site with virtually no standards has to admit that it can’t find a way to defend the latest cheap shot from Trump, you know that Trump has gone too far.
