It’s happened. The Electors did not do their duty to prevent an unqualified unfit useful idiot of a foreign power from assuming the highest executive office in the land, and now the United States will soon undergo “a peaceful transition of power” to a fascist.
Yep, despite losing the popular vote (you know… what functioning democracies worldwide call “the vote”) by a “bigly” amount over 2.8 million votes, the checks and balances meant to prevent a dangerously unfit person from gaining the enormous power to destroy life on the planet didn’t do a damn thing to stop him.
Of course, this begs the question, if the Electoral College can’t stop a malignant narcissist like Trump from making a mockery of us and the government so many fought, bled and died to create, then what exactly is their purpose? Clearly, it’s time to abolish this useless, antiquated, system that was designed to shield slave states from the “tyranny” of the free states, lest they dare try to liberate the human livestock the good Christian conservatives considered their property.
The Republican primary process should have eliminated Twitler the first day he rode down an escalator at Trump Tower and launched his presidential campaign by telling a crowd of paid actors that Mexicans were “…bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” One might think that racist lies would be an automatic disqualifier if ones aim were to be the chief executive in a nation of immigrants, but not when the Republican Party is engaged in a decades-long mission to undermine access to the voting polls, public education and a free press, AKA: the very institutions that make liberal democracy possible in the first place.
We Have Our Work Cut Out For Us.
Don’t get me wrong, Republicans suck, but they didn’t do it alone. Democrats deserve their share of the blame for helping create the fertile ground in which fascism took root. Aided by so-called DLC “New Democrats” who turned their backs on FDR’s New Deal to embrace Wall Street, the United States became the most unequal and least upwardly mobile of all industrialized nations. While Republicans serve the top 1% of the top 1%, the Democrats became the servants of the “professional class,” functionally leaving America with two pro-corporate parties. Money in politics is the root of all evil and both parties are swimming in the same filthy pool corrupted by it, which is why I believe public campaign financing needs to be the primary progressive cause… that is, after we kick the DLC Democrats to the curb, rebuild the Democratic Party in the mold of FDR, and wrest democracy from the clutches of fascism.
Vice President Henry Wallace Warned Us About Today’s Republicans – AKA: Fascists
Please make no mistake, Republicans are fascists. The type that Vice President Henry Wallace warned us about in his 1944 article in the New York Times.
Wallace wrote, “The symptoms of fascist thinking are colored by environment and adapted to immediate circumstances. But always and everywhere they can be identified by their appeal to prejudice and by the desire to play upon the fears and vanities of different groups in order to gain power. It is no coincidence that the growth of modern tyrants has in every case been heralded by the growth of prejudice. It may be shocking to some people in this country to realize that, without meaning to do so, they hold views in common with Hitler when they preach discrimination against other religious, racial or economic groups. Likewise, many people whose patriotism is their proudest boast play Hitler’s game by retailing distrust of our Allies and by giving currency to snide suspicions without foundation in fact.
The American fascists are most easily recognized by their deliberate perversion of truth and fact. Their newspapers and propaganda carefully cultivate every fissure of disunity, every crack in the common front against fascism. They use every opportunity to impugn democracy…
They claim to be super-patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise, but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that, using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjection.”
Keeping the common man in eternal subjugation is, in reality, the entire reason for the Republican Party to exist – and now they have their authoritarian strongman to carry out their agenda.
Nothing focuses the mind like a crisis. Let’s stay motivated, activated and ready to take to the streets. We must not – we cannot – concede an inch to fascism. The impending Trump disasters will be the springboard to the new progressive era. That is, if Trump doesn’t kill us all first.
Now more than ever, we stick together, we win.
