It’s been amply established that Donald Trump is a horrible human being. Any number of outrages would be enough by itself to prove this. He seems incapable of taking criticism. He has no qualms about degrading and belittling people. He condones violent behavior by his supporters, and has few qualms about sharing hateful and violent memes on Twitter.
Sadly, Trump has passed a good number of those deplorable traits to his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric. Based on his social media behavior, Donald Jr. shares a lot more than his first name with his father. It’s a big reason that, contrary to what “Saturday Night Live” would have you believe, Donald Jr. is “Dumber” to Eric’s “Dumb.”
For instance, he has no qualms about retweeting and liking conspiracy theories. This past fall, for instance, he liked a tweet suggesting that the “deep state” was behind claims that Congressman Jim Jordan turned a blind eye to sexual assault at Ohio State.
More recently, soon after Christine Blasey Ford came forward with her claims against Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Jr. took a cheap shot at her on Instagram that would have done his father proud. It says a lot about Junior that this post is still available–even though White House information minister Kellyanne Conway said that Blasey Ford should not have been “insulted.”
Well, we have yet another example that Donald Junior, like his father, is a horrible human being. He saw fit to like a violent meme attacking one of his family’s biggest gadflies, CNN.
On Thursday night, Arthur Schwartz, best known as the longtime comrade-in-arms of former White House communications chief Anthony Scaramucci, saw fit to share this meme on his Twitter feed.
The meme shows a golfer–presumably CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta, one of Trump’s favorite targets–about to tee off when a golf cart barrels into him amid audio of Trump yelling, “Go home to Mommy! Bye!” According to The Washington Post, this came from an audio clip of Trump chiding a protester at one of his rallies.
A Republican taking a cheap–and in this case, violent–shot at CNN wouldn’t be anything new. But what took it to another level was when Donald Jr. saw this roll across his feed and like it. Trump Alert, a bot that keeps track of follows, unfollows, retweets and likes from the Trumps and those in their inner circle, noticed it on Thursday night.
What does it say about Donald Jr. that he would find this even remotely funny?
Then again, Donald Jr. may have been following in his father’s footsteps. After all, Donald Sr. saw fit to share a meme showing him bodyslamming CNN, and another depicting CNN as a bloody splatter on his wingtip.
It says a lot about the kind of person Donald Jr. is that he would even think about hitting the “like” button on something this tasteless and violent. Frankly, it says just as much about his father. Imagine what would happen if Sasha or Malia liked or retweeted a meme depicting Fox News or a religious right luminary being run over. We would rightly be wondering whether their father was asleep at the wheel while they were growing up.
Believe it or not, this is actually the second time Donald Jr. has shown who he really is on social media. On Tuesday, he shared a story on Instagram suggesting that one reason his father’s desire for a massive wall on the southern border is a winning idea is–wait for it–the fact that walls protect visitors to the zoo from animals. If Donald Jr. seriously expects us to believe that he doesn’t know the outrageously racist connotations of that statement, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn that he might be interested in buying.
One of the biggest reasons that Trump is not fit to be president is that he is an abject failure at his most important duty–that of being a husband and a father. If Donald Jr. finds this meme at all acceptable, this is yet more proof. It’s also good reason to wonder what kind of example he’s setting for his five kids. We already know that they don’t have too many good role models. Besides their grandfather, they presumably have to look up to their dad’s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, who called Beto O’Rourke a “beta male” while stumping for Ted Cruz.
Donald Jr. is his father’s son in every way. His decision to like this outrageously violent meme is just more proof.
