The American people voted to give the Democrats control of the House primarily because they wanted a check on Donald Trump. That was made clear from exit polls, which showed a large plurality–38 percent–saw their House vote as a vote against Trump. It’s why a number of silk stocking suburbs that have historically tilted Republican turned an unrecognizable shade of blue last fall.
But apparently two of Trump’s most rabid supporters, Lynette “Diamond” Holloway and Rochelle “Silk” Richardson, missed that memo. On Wednesday morning, they irately demanded that the Democrats leave their dear one alone.
Wait a minute, ladies. Has it occurred to you that the Democrats are looking into whether Trump committed impeachable offenses because they actually do love this country? Remember, when the House returned from its summer recess, the House Judiciary Committee launched a deep dive into Trump’s misdeeds that went beyond Robert Mueller’s findings.
Among other things, the Democrats want to know if Trump is still making money from his real estate empire’s deals with foreign governments and state-owned foreign businesses. If that were the case, it would violate the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which bars government officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments. They are also delving into reports Trump held out the prospect of pardons for potential violations of immigration laws, and are taking a closer look at the Trump campaign’s involvement in hush-money payments to his mistresses in order to silence them before the election.
As Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, Judiciary Committee member, and constitutional scholar, puts it, “the original sin” of the Trump White House was what he and other Democrats see as a deliberate plan to “convert the presidency into a money-making operation for the President and his business and his family.” Even if it doesn’t ultimately result in impeachment, at the very least the findings will be entered into the record–and the voters will have enough information to decide whether this is acceptable behavior for the president.
Riddle me this, Diamond and Silk. How is wanting to find out this information amount to abuse of power? And how does that amount to “acting like evil Dictators”? Now that I think about it, ladies, it’s rather funny that you accuse the Democrats of acting like tinhorn dictators. After all, you yourselves irately demanded that Marco Rubio resign for–horrors!–opposing Trump’s plan to declare a national emergency in order to get his precious wall built. Let’s jog your memories, shall we?
And if you’re so concerned about the Democrats ganging up on “a duly elected president that the American people voted for,” ladies, have you considered that the American people aren’t pleased with what they’re getting? After all, Trump’s average approval rating at FiveThirtyEight hasn’t budged too much above 43 percent at any point. Indeed, as I write this on Wednesday night, it’s at 41.8 percent–brutal by any standard.
If that isn’t enough, A recent CNN poll found that a whopping 60 percent of Americans do not believe Trump deserves reelection. That same poll found that only 33 percent of Americans believe he has changed the country for the better.
If Diamond and Silk can look at these numbers and still have the guts to whine that Democrats don’t love this country if they want Trump held to account, then they more than deserve my nickname for them–Cubic Zirconia and Burlap. After all, they are peddling a narrative that is as fake as they are. And if they’re upset about the Democrats doing their jobs, it must be a sign that the blue team is doing something right.
