On paper, Donald Trump’s approval ratings are the most brutal on record for any president in modern times. According to FiveThirtyEight’s average, Trump has never been able to get too far above 42 percent. But he’s lucky to be doing that well. Republicans’ support for their new master can only be described as otherworldly.
For instance, Gallup’s tracking poll recently pegged Trump’s support among self-identified Republicans at a whopping 89 percent–more than double his overall approval rating of 43 percent. Indeed, Trump’s support among Republicans has ballooned during his presidency. Since 2018, Gallup has consistently pegged his support among Republicans in the 90s or high 80s.
This has held even in the face of one outrage after another from this White House. How is that possible, you ask? Well, a recent edition of one of the most rabidly pro-Trump podcasts may provide an answer. In the wake of yet another woman claiming Trump sexually assaulted her, the hosts of this podcast harrumphed that she and the other accusers can’t possibly be telling the truth. Why? Drum roll, please–they aren’t that attractive.
Last weekend, Elle magazine advice columnist E. Jean Carroll became the 22nd woman–at least–to claim Trump sexually assaulted her. She claimed that sometime around 1995 or 1996, Trump raped her at a tony New York department store. Predictably, Carroll has been bombarded with vicious death threats from Trumpkins who are outraged anyone would dare accuse their master of such a thing.
What did Trump himself have to say? Well, on Tuesday, he told The Hill in an exclusive interview that Carroll couldn’t possibly be telling the truth, in part because “she’s not my type.” Translation–I couldn’t have possibly violated her, because I wasn’t interested in her anyway. Not exactly the response you’d expect from a guy who is supposedly a baby Christian. Indeed, it sounds more like the man who boasted he could “grab ’em by the pussy” just because he was a celebrity.
Predictably, the nation’s late-night comedians had a field day with it. Trevor Noah, for instance, noted that Trump effectively told the nation just how warped his priorities really are. Watch here.
Seth Meyers mused that Trump was so determined to deny that he raped Carroll that he may have admitted it. Watch here.
But the deplorables saw it differently. As if on cue from his master, Bill Mitchell, the impresario of the rabidly pro-Trump YourVoice America YouTube channel, put Carroll and Trump’s other accusers on blast on Tuesday night’s edition of his flagship show. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
It was obvious where this was going when one of Mitchell’s frequent guests, former beauty queen-turned-deplorable Karyn Turk, harrumphed that it was “so obvious and so transparent” that Trump’s accusers are lying. Turk claimed that there was “a war on white men”–and it’s being driven in part by “leftist women that have books to sell.” She vowed to “put money on it” that Carroll was just another liar, and argued that these stories actually harm women who really have been raped.
Mitchell, for his part, thought the Democrats had swung and missed by trumpeting Carroll’s cause for another reason–her looks. He claimed that if you were going to accuse Trump of being a rapist, you would pick “an attractive woman.”
Mitchell recalled that when Christine Blasey Ford claimed Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school, he only had to look at Ford’s pictures from that time to decide that it didn’t seem plausible. He claimed to have seen this with a lot of women who have come forward of late. Turk agreed, and dropped all pretense when she snorted, “These women are unattractive.”
One has to wonder–was Mitchell in talks with the Trump campaign? After all, this screed echoed the line from his master almost word for word. So in Trumpland, if you come forward with a claim of sexual assault, no one should believe you unless you’re a real knockout.
Let’s call it for what it is. The president of the United States is trying to normalize rape culture. And Mitchell and his fellow Trump diehards are more than willing to help him do so. Keep this on file the next time they ask why we call them deplorable.
